Mate 3rd class (petty officer) on
the U.S.S. George Washington.
On July 22, family day was
observed on the U.S.S. George
Washington which was in harbor
at Norfolk, Va.
Horace and his three daughters
attended family day. His daugh
ters are: Judy Brabham of
Winston-Salem, N. C., and who is
mother of Donnie, Danielle,
Deborah and Dana Brabham:
Debbie Collins of Macon, who
teaches at Kings Chapel
Elementary School; and Shirley
Arrington of Perry, who is a
teacher at Perry Elementary
School.
They went aboard the carrier at
4:30 a.m., got under way at 7
a.m., went out to sea and turned
back to port at 1 p.m.
There were 6,000 men aboard
ship, which was as tall as a 24-
story building. Its flight deck cov
ered 4V2 acres (the length of four
football fields) This was the flag
ship in the Persian Gulf.
This family day was also the
50-year D-Day Celebration.
Horace felt that history was
being repeated, for during World
War 11, he was chief petty officer
on the aircraft carrier, U. S. S.
Mission Bay. Now his grandson is
also a petty officer on a mission
carrier. Spending the day on
board the carrier U. S. S. George
Washington brought back pleas
ant memories for “Grandpa
Horace”.
