Ohio couple returns

50 years later
Couple wed in Perry 50 years ago

Pat and John Kundert and Don
and Florence “Flo” Norris were
friends in Ohio when their chil
dren were young. They lived in
the same community and, in fact,
all were members of Aley Church.
Over the years, they have visit
ed one another. The Kunderts
came to Perry for the wedding of
Gerald Norris, son of Don and
Flo, and in recent years since
retirement, they have visited more
frequently. They were in Perry last
week, celebrating their 50th wed
ding anniversary.
Pat Kundert was a native of
Macon, and had met John Kundert
when he was a cadre member at
Camp Wheeler. The two became
engaged, planned their wedding
and invited a few relatives. The
wedding was to be in Perry at the
home of Ruth (Mrs. Cater) Rogers,
who was a friend of Pat’s mother.
The wedding was to be at 7 p.m.
after John Kundert got off duty.
However, when the wedding date
rolled around, his organization was
placed on alert. Sometimes the
alerts were only for a few minutes,
and sometimes for hours.
Phone calls had to be made to
inform the relatives of the delay.
Finally, two hours later, in a
downpour of rain, the wedding
party arrived in Perry.
John Hodges, the Houston
County Ordinary, and the minister,
the Rev. J. B. Smith, met the party
at the Rogers home at 905
Washington Ave. Their walk down

the hall toward a spinning wheel
made a lasting impression on Pat
Kundert.
The group gathered in the
Rogers’ parlor where Smith, pas
tor of Perry Methodist Church,
performed the ceremony and
Hodges stood by to sign the mar
riage certificate.
The bride extended her left
hand for the groom to place the
wedding band upon it. Her ring
finger was slightly curved, and
when the groom began placing the
ring on her finger, it slipped off
and rolled around and around in
circles on the floor.
When it stopped rolling, the
groom retrieved it and placed it
solidly upon Pat’s finger where it
has remained unto this day and
“has never been off my finger”,
Pat Kundert said.
While celebrating their golden
wedding anniversary, they wanted
to look up the Rogers’ home
where they were married, but
couldn’t remember where it was,
except that it was a big white
house not too far from the old
court house.
A few phone calls by this writer
to Coralie Nunn, a former neigh
bor of the Rogers after they
moved to a brick home, obtained
the correct address of the “big
white house” where the wedding
took place.
Don Norris took his guests there
where the residents, Bob and Linda
Kelly, graciously invited them in to
look over the home and to make
pictures for their scrapbook.
