Chief could be
named by Feb. 1

It has been five months since the
city of Perry lost two key officials
and it still may be a few weeks
before the positions of city manager
and police chief are filled.
Former city manager Phil Clark
resigned his post Aug. 15 after he
and city representatives could not
come to grips over disagreements in
management.
Former police chief Frank
Simons left that department when
he found greener pastures heading
up Valdosta’s police department.
Clark has since found a job in
management in Macon, according
to Perry Mayor Jim Worrall.
Members of city council have
been informed of a meeting to take
place Dec. 20 during which they
will be presented with resumes and
applications of police chief
hopefuls.
Worrall said they will be asked
to rate each candidate in an effort to
narrow the field down further.
Some 66 applications for the job
were initially considered; the mayor
said he has gone through each
resume and pulled those that seem
to have the kind of qualifications
needed to head up the Perry force.
"i hope we can arrive at eight to
10 outstanding candidates," Worrall
said. "We've got some real
outstanding applications."
Interviews will probably not
begin until after the first of the
year.
"I hope to have somebody in
place by Feb. 1," said Worrall.
The city manager's position was
put on hold primarily because "we
did not receive early on a large
number of interested applicants,”
Worrall said.
"In recent days we have had
some people working on it for us
in the Georgia Municipal
Association, the Institute of
Government at the University of
Georgia and as a result of their
efforts, we are beginning to get
some phone calls from some people
who said they would like to be
considered," Worrall said.
