CLARo
Please, Mr. Santa
Here’s my wish
list, Santa Claus
It's that time again. Time to
make out my Christmas wish list
for my friends in the sports world. I
don't know if any of last year's
wishes came true, but it never hurts
to wish. Here goes.
For Jj Johnson, the top guy here
at the Times-Journal, complete
recovery from the heart attack that
slowed him to a crawl back in
October. He's following all of his
instructions and doing the things
he's supposed to do, and more
importantly, he's not doing the
things he's not supposed to do.
Sounds like he intends to make a
full recovery. The sooner, the
better.
For Ronnie Jones, lot's of big
ole linemen to go with his
returning backfield stars, and the
few returning linemen. Might as
well wish for a 230-pound fullback,
too.
For Beth Jones, someone to
teach her how to make those “big
old cathead biscuits" Ronnie likes
so much.
For George Collins, also a
fullback and a couple of running
backs, and the patience, from
himself and his supporters to see
his program come to fruition.
For C.B. Cornett at Macon
County, the ability to cope with
his next regular season loss. He's
had only one in six years, so the
next one won't be easy to take.
Forty-three straight regular season
wins, and counting.
For Ray Goff, a coaching
position if he wants it. Only if he
wants it.
For Vince Dooley, another
hobby. The Athletic Director's job
at Georgia needs to be handled by
somebody else. Ray Goff, maybe?
For Carl Thomas, another trip to
the state basketball tournament
with his young, inexperienced Perry
Panthers. And how about some
recognition as the best boys
basketball coach anywhere, period?
Ditto for Kelly Britsky, the
Perry girls softball coach who took
a very young team and molded them
into state championship contenders.
Hornets split with Milledge
Girls win in Tattnall tourney warmup
By PHIL CLARK
Times-Journal Sports
MILLEDGEVILLE The
Westfield basketball teams split
games Dec. 15 with John Milledge
Academy here, and will take a long
holiday break before competing in
the annual Tattnall Square Holiday
Tournament beginning Dec. 27.
Jennifer Smith scored 18 points
for the Lady Hornets as they
improved their Georgia Independent
Schools Association record to 3-2
heading into the break.
The halftime score was just 16-
13, but the Lady Hornets outscored
Milledge 29-16 in the second half
to coast to the win.
Stephanie Barr was also in
double figures with 11 while Mary
Katherine Walker canned the game's
only three-pointer.
The Hornets didn’t fare as well,
though, dropping an 82-59 decision
to Milledge.
The Trojans got 30 points from
GHSA teams visit 1-20 for titles
By PHIL CLARK
Times-Journal Sports
We did not pick the winners of
last weekend's state championship
games in print, but our favorites to
take home the top trophies were the
teams that won them.
Southwest DeKalb beat
Parkview in AAAA, Josey edged
Cedar Shoals in AAA, Elbert
County won over Washington-
Wilkes in AA while Lincoln
County handled Macon County in
A.
All four championship games
were played along Interstate 20,
with three of the four winners based
just miles off the interstate.
Southwest DeKalb beat
Parkview at DeKalb Memorial
Stadium, 14-7. The Southwest
complex and the stadium are near I
-20.
In AAA, Josey of Augusta beat
Cedar Shoals 13-6. That was also
played near the interstate.
In AA, Elbert County won over
Washington-Wilkes, but the game
was held in Washington, 20 miles
and The Stopper's Extra is 10 &ia each Monday.

On Sport*
We hope Kelly can find a couple of
replacements for her graduating
seniors. Three actually.
For Robert Davis at Warner
Robins, a good break in the last
couple of stages of the football
playoffs, instead of the bad ones his
team usually gets.
For Rodney Walker at Peach
County, for someone to beat Josey
before his Trojans have to play
them. Josey has eliminated Peach
two years in a row.
For Sandy Lee at Houston
County, another good softball
team, maybe another
championship, since she won't be
competing with Perry next year for
region and state honors.
For Doug Johnson. Cliff Hutto
and Casey Jones at Houston
County High, recognition for the
great job they do with their kids,
not necessarily on the court and
field, but away from athletics. This
group forms one of the classiest
acts in high school sports.
For Ken and Jason, the Sikes
brothers, recovery from shoulder
and arm problems that slowed their
pursuit of major league baseball
careers. Both appear to be set for
another shot, Ken with the
Dodgers, Jason with the Phillies.
For Tim Allen of Westfield,
some coach with enough insight to
recognize this enormously talented
individual who can do more things
to help a football team that one can
imagine. Come on, guys, let's
somebody give him a chance.
For Ben Hulbert, another
Westfield football player, I wish
good health and an injury-free
senior year. This talented running
back gets my nod as the best in
Houston County since James
Brooks at Warner Robins in 1976.
If he stays healthy, he wrilefc his
own ticket.
And for all of you readers, may
you continue to read these sports
pages.
Jason Hodge and 22 from Shane
Robbins as they used a 20-point
advantage at halftime to put the
Hornets away and pick up their fifth
win against no losses.
Westfield got double digit
scoring from Matt Shepley, Ben
Hulbert and Chip Davis in dropping
to 1-2. Most of the Hornets have
had little practice time, since most
also played football.
Girls: Westfield (45) Jennifer Smith 18,
Mary Katherine Walker 7, Julee Fryer 4,
Jennifer Stewart 3, Stephanie Barr 11,
Laura Posey 2. John Milledge (29) Dath
Daniel 6, Niki Simmons 4, Kelly Bass 2,
Holly Raley 5, Amy Ellis 4, Kimberly
Biddick 6, Barrie Pennington 2.
Halftime: Westfield 16, John Milledge
13
Boys: Westfield (59) Joey Brumbelow
9, Matt Shepley 10, Ben Hulbert 11, Chip
Davis 11, Todd Rigdon 6, Scott Hill 6, Will
Chestnut 2, Brian Nash 4. John Milledge
(82) Lance Boyer 7, J.T. Wall 11, Ryan
McDonel 2, Jason Hodge 30, Shane
Robbins 22, Parker Stephens 4, Bill Dyer 3,
Domemck Perrome 1, Paul Davis 2.
Halftime: John Milledge 46, Westfield
26.
off 1-20, and also 20 miles from the
interstate, Lincoln County beat
Macon County 12-0.
The Elbert County win over
Wahsington Wilkes 27-0 was the
only lopsided game of the finals,
and avenged Elbert's only loss of
the year.
For Lincoln County, it was their
13th state championship, seventh in
the past 11 years, and eighth under
coach Larry Campbell, who has
now won 281 games in his
coaching career.
The frustration continued for
Macon County, still seeking their
first state title. It was the second
time in four years the Bulldogs
have lost the title game.
Southwest DeKalb won the state
championship for the first time
since 1972. Josey's win was the
first football championship won by
an Augusta school since 1966.
The oddity about this year's
finals is that three of the play in a
south Georgia region, 4, yet none of
them are located south of Interstate
20.
