WARNER ROBINS For the
past three months, the Houston
County Extension Service director
position has been vacant.
An official with the University
of Georgia Extension program divi
sion based in Fort Valley, Jimmy
Savage, appeared at the March 19
meeting of the Houston County
Commission in Warner Robins.
His recommendation that
Peggy Bledsoe, who has worked
as an agent off and on since 1975,
be named as director gained unan
imous approval.
Bledsoe, who has has been act
ing director for the past three
months, is a resident of Henderson.
She has been full-time with the
Extension Service since 1987.
He said, “We are extremely for
tunate to have such a qualified
person to handle those duties.”
Commissioners went along
with the recommendation from
Savage that Dooly County agent
Larry Willingham will be hired on
a part-time basis to deal with agri
cultural items in Houston County
from April 1-June 30.
“He will be at the Perry office
from 8 a.m. until noon each day.
He will be dedicated to getting the
job done,” Savage said.
Under the proposal, which also
had to gain support of the Dooly
County Commission, each gov
ernment will pay one-half of
Willingham’s salary.
Also approved to work largely
with the Houston County 4-H pro
gram was Bleckley County native
Kelli Pipkin. She has been an
extension agent in Screven County.
In another action, a group of
homeowners in the Ashford Park
subdivision near Warner Robins
voiced their concerns over a
drainage problem they say turns
many of their yards into lakes.
One of the residents told com
missioners “we think you ought to
be responsible for helping us.”
Commission chairman Sherrill
Stafford said to change a natural
drain is very difficult.
He did tell the homeowners the
county will talk again with soil
conservation workers and see if
there is anything the county can do.
Commissioner Calvin Maye
took time at the meeting to
announce he will not be seeking a
second term in office during the
July 9 primary.
“I have not regretted serving
Houston County,” Maye said. “I
have enjoyed serving and would
do it all over again.”
Maye said its impossible to
make everyone happy as a com
missioner.
His colleagues on the board
quickly praised Maye.
