Would-be Senator Cleland
praises Senator Sam Nunn
By RICK JOHNSTONE
For the Times-Journal
The man who hopes to replace
Sam Nunn in the U.S. Senate had
high praise for the Perry native on
a recent cam
paign visit to
town.
Democrat
Max Cleland
said Nunn had
established a
track record of
service, mod
eration and bi
partisanship on
Capitol Hill.
Cleland said those are traits he
also has to offer in the coming
election, where he faces
Republican Guy Milner.
In an interview with the
Houston Times-Journal, Cleland
said Nunn had continued a string
of effective leadership in Georgia,
from “Richard Russell before him
in the Senate, to his uncle Carl
Vinson in the House.”
The former Georgia Secretary
of State said he would like to take
a seat on the Armed Services com
mittee, which Nunn has served on
for many years.
Survey: Houston hospital patients
pleased with their level of care
By EMILY JOHNSTONE

Most inpatients of Perry
Hospital or Houston Medical
Center who responded to a survey
recently seem to be happy with
the service they received while in
the hospital, according to Houston
Healthcare Complex marketing
director Mary Jane Kinnas.
The results of the survey was
obtained from patients discharged
from May through July. That is
what Kinnas told members of the
Hospital Authority of Houston
County during their regular Aug.
28 meeting.
The report indicated that 95
percent of the respondents would
return to Houston Medical Center
or Perry Hospital for care.
Ninety one percent said they
would recommend either hospital
to others and 95 percent rated the
overall quality of care they

“There are a dozen military
bases in Georgia, not the least of
which is Robins Air Force base,”
said Cleland. “Senator Nunn has
served well as an advocate for the
bases and I hope to continue that
leadership.”
He said instead of closing mili
tary bases there should be a re
positioning of the forces.
“You can downsize too quickly,
subtracting bases and jobs,”
Cleland commented.
Cleland contrasted his style
with that of his opponent. He said
he is a moderate, while Milner is
more of an ideologue.
“This job should go not to the
highest bidder, but to the one most
qualified for the job,” Cleland
said.
Cleland, who spent some time
in the nation’s capitol heading up
the Veterans Administration,
thinks that stint is helpful.
He said he had helped people
deal with the bureaucracy in
Washington and he knows who to
contact there.
Cleland ran unopposed in the
Democratic primary. Milner
defeated Johnnie Isakson in a
runoff for the GOP nomination.

The addition will be open to
public viewing on Nov. 9, she
said, and “open for business” Nov.

meeting held Aug. 29 at the
Wcllston Center brought together
over 20 Houston Countians to
ponder the problems facing public
recreation.
Perry recreation director Tom
Domincy told the Times-Journal
during a later interview that he
believes that meeting was produc

the group to help bring about
answers to some of the difficult
questions brought about by the
recreation issue.
The group, dubbed the Steering
Committee, was made up of what
Dominey termed a “cross section
of citizens from Houston County.”
Three participants, Geraldine
Davis, the Rev. Leonard Billings and

said Dominey.
This was the result of a deci
sion process recommended by the
Institute of Community and Area
Development of the University of
Georgia (ICAD).
The meeting was facilitated by
Steve Dempsey, a spokesman for
ICAD, who was hired by the
county and local municipalities to
help give guidance with recreation
for this area.
Dominey praised the process
put forth by ICAD for the Steering
Committee to be guided by.
Part ol the process includes an
upcoming four-hour Sept. 9 work
session to be held by the committee
at Rozar Park from 5:30-9:30 p in.
The major purpose of this ses
