nine plays to take the early lead
over the Westfield Hornets here
Aug. 30. then used a big second

Peach rebounds, dumps Lady Panthers

Held to just 7 hits and 2 runs
by the Perry Lady Panthers Aug.
20, the Peach County Lady
Trojans unloaded on Perry for 19
hits and 17 runs just eight days
later as they won the return match
against Kelly Britsky’s Lady
Panthers Aug. 28, erasing an early
13-3 Perry lead for a 17-14 victo
ry at Rozar Park.
Perry jumped to an 8-1 lead
atter one inning, using live singles,
two doubles and a couple of Peach
errors to score eight times in the
inning highlighted by a two-run
double off the bat of April Fendley
that scored the first two Perry runs.
Peach kept pounding away,

HAWKINS VILLE The reality of find
ing replacements for graduated running
backs set into reality for Perry Panther fans
here Aug. 30.
The Panthers edged out Twiggs County
7-0 but then fell to Houston County 10-0
and Hawkinsville 14-0 in a trio of 12-
minute games during a Georgia High
School Association sanctioned football jam
boree at Bobby Gentry Stadium.
Problems which plagued the Panthers
last year raised their heads again. Perry had
difficulty with ball handling, dropping the
ball five times during the three games.
Rushed when he dropped back to pass,
quarterback John Brewer threw four inter
ceptions.
The Panthers amassed 59 yards in penal
ties during their 36 minutes of play.
There were moments for the Panthers
however. One of those moments came on
the final Panther play of the first game.
Driving against Twiggs County, the
Panthers got a first down on a 16-yard
reverse by Anthony Lane to pul the ball on
the Cobra 35-yard line.
From there. Donatrious Thomas scam-

fumbled the ball on their first play
from scrimmage after a penalty
had put them in a first-and-fifteen
situation from their own 18-yard
line. The fumble was recovered by
the Cavaliers, and four plays later.
Wesley had his second touchdown
of the night as Mount de Sales
took a 13-0 lead with five minutes
left in the first quarter.
The teams exchanged the foot
ball again before Westfield took
advantage on a Cavalier tumble.
With the Cavaliers in possession at
their own 37, Franklin Mack was
hit hard at the line of scrimmage
and the ball popped forward and
into the hands of defensive back
Ben Hulbert, who returned it to the
Mount de Sales 32.
After Hulbert gained 5 yards on
first down, sophomore quarter
back Trevor Jones, making his
first varsity start, hit wide receiver

The Cobras, playing their first varsity level

test late in the first 6-minute half when they
drove to the Perry 25 yard line. There, a quar

Two quick first downs gave the
Hornets the ball at the Cavaliers’
48-yard line. Hulbert got four, then
Staines picked up 10 for the first
down to the Westfield 41.
However a holding penalty
brought the ball back to the 31 and
set up a brilliant run of 21 yards
by junior Jerry Horton on his first
carry of the season.
Soon, the Hornets had to punt
the ball away and that set up
another Westfield interception,
this time by Trey Wilder. With
Walton throwing from his own 49
on a second and 16. Wilder
stepped in front of the receiver at
the Westfield 40 and raced all the
way to the Cavaliers' eight yard
line before being brought down.
The following possession was
perhaps the most disappointing of
the night.
With a first and goal at the eight
back to back singles by Amber
Hunnicutt and Sara Dent to start
the inning. Shannon Lewis drew a
walk to load the bases, but a force
out at the plate on a Jennifer
Stewart grounder prevented
Westfield from scoring but left the
bases loaded.
After Barr grounded out to score
the first run, Mary Katherine Walker
delivered a two-run single to make it
6-3. However, that was all Westfield

Picking the winners
High school football is back!
For the next several weeks, this
space will be devoted to our
annual attempt at picking the out
come of high school games.
Traditionally, early in the season,
the task is a little tougher as it
takes a few weeks to get a grip on
just what all of the schools return
in way of key players, and how
youngsters come along to help.
The Georgia Independent
Schools Association started last
week with Westfield dropping
their opener to Mount de Sales.
They have Tattnall at the Hornets’
Nest Friday night. Tattnall beat
First Presbyterian 37-18 in their
opener, and with that huge stu
dent body, Barney Hester always
has a lot of players to pick from.
Even though the Trojans lost
some key players, they are better
prepared early in the year because
of the numbers they return. Ronnie
Jones lost a lot of key players, too,
and he doesn’t have the luxury ot
halls full of potential stars to pick
from, so it will take a few games to
get everybody in sync.
Jones lost defensive coach
Ricky Lane, and line coach Jim
Massey, whom Jones calls the
best at his position in the GISA, is
limited because of health prob
lems. All things taken into consid
eration, Phil’s pick is Tattnall.
Warner Robins kicked off their
season last Saturday in that 5-
game marathon at the Georgia
Dome called the Corky Kell
Classic, posting a 21-14 win over
the Pope Greyhounds of region
6AAAA. Robert Davis tucks
away career win number 246 and
takes the week off.
On the north side of town,
Conrad Nix will be trying to
improve on last year’s 6-5 record
as his Eagles go to Griffin for a
battle with the Bears. Griffin
pulled out a 35-34 thriller when
the teams met last year. Griffin
has a new coach as long-time
head man Lloyd Bohannan
retired. Steve Shankweiler
coached at Glynn Academy in
Brunswick. The football isn’t as
tough down there, and Griffin has
had personnel problems, so Phil’s
pick is Northside.
Houston County has moved up
a notch in classification, and will
play in region 2-AAA, perhaps
the toughest AAA region in the
Georgia High School Association.
The Bears were 4-6 last year with
a very young team. Doug Johnson
hopes to improve on the record
this year, but it will be tough in a
very competitive region.
He still has a young team,
though they are a year experi
enced. The strength will be a big
offensive line and a strong line
backing corp. The backfield is
young, but quick. The Bears open
with a non-region game against
Southeast Macon. Good move!
Phil’s pick, Houston County.
George Collins begins his sec
ond year at the helm of the Perry
team. His 3-7 team has been hit
hard by the loss of key players to
graduation, including Kiwaukee
Thomas and some offensive line
men, as well as steady tight end
Larry Beard.
Others have left the team for
various reasons, and Collins will
start the year with a very thin
team. To compound things, the
Panthers must open with always
tough Peach County.
Though the Trojans are them
selves rebuilding after the loss of
several key players, they figure to
handle the Panthers at Anderson
Field. Phil’s pick, Peach County.
Down the road in Macon
County, C.B. Cornett sends his
Bulldogs to the field against
Central Talbotton of region SA.
The Bulldogs own the GHSA’s
longest current regular season win
streak at 43, and figure to add one
Friday night at Tom Adams Field.
The Bulldogs lost some key
linemen on offense and a strong
set of linebackers, but beat
Dublin and Northside in a jam
boree Friday night, so they appear
set for another run at the elusive
state championship. With the
entire offensive backfield return
ing, the regular season could be a
snap. Phil’s pick, Macon County.
This week, we also like Clay
Hill’s Crisp County Cougars over
a tough class A team, Charlton
County, but watch out for an
ambush in Folkston! West
Laurens opens Dublin, and must
contain all-star quarterback Kyle
Crabb. Though Dublin lost the
entire defensive line, they should
handle the Rams. Phil’s pick,
Dublin. We also like Tift County
over Worth County, Dodge
County over Telfair County and
Manchester over Harris County.
