Peach pounds Panthers in season opener, 42-0
By PHIL CLARK
Times-Journal Sports
FORT VALLEY The Perry
Panthers dug themselves an early
hole and Peach County took
advantage of it to post an easy 42-
0 season-opening win over Perry
Sept 6.
The game started innocently
enough, with Perry winning the
toss and taking the football.
Failing to move the chains. Perry
punted to Peach and the Trojans
got the ball at their own 23 fol
lowing a 41-yard punt by John
Brewer.
Able to gain only one first
down, Peach, too, had to punt.
That's when the trouble began.
Perry fumbled the Peach punt and
the Trojans recovered at the Perry
9-yard-linc.
Quarterback Regan Torbert
scored from three yards out on a
third down run. and Clay Bryan
kicked the first of his six points
after touchdown to make it 7-0
barely midway through the first
quarter.
But the trouble didn’t end
there. Perry fumbled the kickoff,
and again the Trojans recovered
deep in Panther territory. From
the Perry 20-yard-line, Peach
County took four plays to score
again with the help of a Perry face
mask penalty. Louis Ivory scored
from the 1-yard-line with 4:27 left
in the quarter.
After Perry failed to move the
chains, Brewer had to scramble
alter scooping up a bad snap on a

The banner asked to Westfield,

and Peach quickly took advantage
for the third time in the quarter.
Torbert hit Ivory for the final 19
yards and the score and Peach
went up 21-0 wdth 1:33 left in the
first quarter.
Brewer's fourth punt of 32
yards gave the Trojans possession
at their own 32 yard line and six
plays later Terez Thomas took it in
year ago. That game the Hornets
lost by a field goal. The game Sept.
6 the Hornets lost by a 27-7 score.
Taking advantage of Hornet
miscues and good field position,
the visiting Trojans wasted little
time establishing themselves in
the game and eased to the win.
The teams exchanged posses

for a 28-0 lead.
After an exchange of punts, the
Panthers got the ball at their own
20-yard-line and mounted their
first serious drive of the night.
After Donte Holmes got 8 yards
on a third-down carry. Brewer and
the Panthers gambled on fourth
down and Brewer gained two
yards to the 31 for the Panthers’
first down, their first of the game.
The drive bogged down.

to the Trojan 38-vard line before
running out of steam.
Another pair of punts gave
Tattnall the ball at the Trojan 43-
yard line. From there, Tattnall
moved downfield quickly to the
Westfield 29-yard-line.
Quarterback Pete Brack found
Matt Page for a 25-yard pass and a
first-and-goal at the Hornet 4-yard
line.
Brack went wide right for the
score but his pass for the PAT
effort was incomplete.
With seven seconds left in the
half, Westfield stopped a potential
Tattnall scoring drive with an
interception by J.R. Moore. He
snagged the pass about the Hornet
5-yard line and returned it to the
Tattnall 18-yard line before being
caught from behind.
Westfield quarterback Trevor
Jones completed a 4-yard pass to
Ben Hulbert. The Hornets
attempted to call time to set up a
field goal attempt by J.T. Shy, but
officials said the half had ended.
Tattnall moved to put the game
out of reach early in the second
half. Taking the kickoff, the
Trojans picked up 5 yards in two
runs by Smith before Brack
scrambled for 35 yards to the
Hornet 35. Smith took a pitch to
the left side for the touchdown.
Robert Stickel completed a pass
for the PAT effort and with 10:13
left in the third quarter, Tattnall
went ahead 20-0.

Westfield defense set up a Hornet
attempt at scoring when Hulbert

Panthers mounted their most seri
ous scoring threat, moving all the
way to the Peach 2-yard line on a
drive highlighted by a 10-yard
Holmes carry and an 8-yard
reverse by Anthony Lane.
With Perry facing a fourth
down punting situation midway
through the drive. Peach was
guilty of a personal foul on the
Perry punt, and the Panthers
retained possession at the Peach
County 26 yard line.
After Lane's 8-yard reverse.
Brewer got a first down at the 18-
yard-line on a 6-yard keeper.
Brewer kept again for two to the
10 and two carries by Holmes got
the ball to Peach 2-yard line with
a fourth-and-goal.
Peach County held and took
over at their own 2 with 8:55 left
in the fourth quarter. Perry had
kept the ball for more than 6 min
utes. but came up empty.
Then lightning struck again!
Quarterback Torbert kept the ball
from his own 2-yard line, broke
through the Perry defense and
outran everybody down the field
on a 98-yard scamper for the only
score in the last half.
Perry got the ball for two more
possessions and although they did
pick up three first downs on an
11-play drive, they gave up the
ball on downs and the game ended
with a final score of 42-0.

pass before connecting with
Hulbert for 3 yards.
Facing fourth-and-five from the
Trojan 15, the Hornets elected to
send Brian Staines for the first
down. He made but 2 yards and
the ball went over on downs with
1:22 left in the period.
Westfield scored early in the
fourth quarter. Taking possession
at the Hornet 47-yard-line, the
Hornets got 8 yards on a pass from
Jones to Hulbert.
Three plays later, Jerry Horton
picked up 4 yards. Two plays later,
the gained 11 yards to the left side
of the Hornet line for a first down
at the Trojan 30-yard line.
Staines went straight ahead for
5 yards before Jones completed a
25-yard pass to Trey Wilder for a
touchdown. Hulbert ran the PAT
effort after a bad snap, but was
unable to reach the end zone and
the score remained 20-6, Tattnall.
Tattnall added a fourth touch
down with 1:23 left in the game
when Brack went left for 39 yards
and the score.
Hornet coach Ronnie Jones
said a virus which slowed Hulbert
affected the offense and defense of
the Hornets against Tattnall.
Jones said he believes the
Hornets will soon turn around
their season. “We need a win. I
don’t known much about Augusta
Christian, but I plan to learn a lot
this week,” he said of the team

Picking winners
Trying to predict the outcome
of high school football is a lot of
fun. but early in the season, it's
sometimes a little trying. It takes a
few weeks to get a feel on how a
particular team is going.
We had two misses and a tie in
our first try this season. Griffin
beat Northside 37-21. With Griffin
under a new coach, I felt
Northside had a good shot at win
ning. I dod not know the Eagles'
quarterback wouldn't play. I also
missed the Crisp-Charlton game. I
picked Crisp, but remember I cau
tioned about an ambush. Charlton
won 8-6. Manchester and Harris
County tied.
The Warner Robins Demons
were off last week, and return to
action Sept 14 as they host Clarke
Central at McConnell-Talbert
Stadium. Clarke Central coach Billy
Henderson has retired. He logged
286 wins, fifth on the all-time list.
His replacement, as expected,
is son-in-law Steve Brooks, whose
first game as head coach at Clarke
was a win. Brooks had previously
been the head coach at Statesboro.
The Gladiators beat cross-town
rival Cedar Shoals and come into
the Stadium Saturday night on an
emotional high.
The Demons lost a lot of play
ers from last year's team, but
opened with a 21-14 win over
Pope. Robert Davis, at 246, is only
two wins behind the late Jim
Cavan and the retired Ray Lamb
on the all-time list. He won't move
up this week. Phil's pick, Clarke.
Peach County comes off a big
win over Perry with a trip into
Warner Robins Sept 13 to play
Northside. Peach does not appear
to be overpowering this year, and
a step-up in classification might
not bode well. I look for the
Eagles to rebound from the Griffin
loss. Phil's pick, Northside.
Perry had just one non-region
game this year because of The'
addition of an extra school in the
region. With nine region games on
the schedule, they'll get right to it
this week. John Peacock's Dodge
County Indians come calling at
the Panther Pit Sept. 13, and with
him he'll bring quarterback
Rodney Kirtz and tight end
Marlon Davis, two of the top
prospects in Middle Georgia.
The Panthers are thin on expe
rience, and will have to pick their
way through the schedule. Dodge
comes off an 11-2 season and beat
Telfair County 34-0 in their open
er. Perry must find a way to gener
ate some offense (19 total yards, 1
first down in the first half against
Peach County). They'll get better,
but it will take a while. Phil’s pick,
Dodge County.
Doug Johnson takes his 1-0
Bears on the road after an opening
game win over Southeast Macon.
The Bears play at Southeast
Bulloch, a class AA team that fin
ished 2-8 last year but won their
opener over Brantley County last
week. The Bears won't lose to a AA
team. Phil's pick, Houston County.
Westfield dropped to 0-2 for the
first time under Ronnie Jones, and
will make a long trip to Augusta
Sept. 13. Augusta Christian won
state championships in baseball
and boys basketball last year, and
the football team is improving.
The Hornets will improve with
each game, and Friday would be a
good time to pick up the first win.
Phil's pick, Westfield.
A strong class A Turner County
team plays at Crisp County Sept.
13. Already Crisp has lost to one
class A team, and Clay Hill's
Cougars, who should be a chal
lenger for the 2AAA title, don't
figure to lose to another one. Fhil's
pick, Crisp County.
Mount de Sales has won twice
pretty handily. I look for the
Cavaliers to be a serious con
tender for the state championship
this year. After beating Westfiled
in the opener, the Cavaliers scored
48 points against two-time class
AA state champion Terrel)
Academy, and look to have little
trouble with Stratford this week.
Phil's pick, Mount de Sales.
Macon County demolished
Central Taltobbon in their opener,
and will do the same to
Montgomery County. Tattnall will
have more trouble with Windsor
than they think, but the Trojans
will prevail. Mary Persons opens
the season at Grecne-Taliaferro,
and the Bulldogs give Dan Pitts
career win numher 326.
