Pilots express concern about tax assessments
From Staff, Community Reports
Some pilots who keep their planes at the
Perry-Houston County Airport are apparently
concerned over some mail they have been
receiving.
The pi lots have been sent tax assessments
from both the city of Perry and Houston
County, the two governing groups who help
finance the airport.
At the Nov. 4 meeting ol tnc Airport
Authorin', lacilitv manager Jon House! >aid
those bills are about the same from both gov
ernment entitities, whereas in the past there had
not been two such bills.
' I have had 20 guv s call me upset about these
laves, said lived base operator Mark Pavne.
He said most oflhe pilots vv ho expressed an
interest in renting one of the new hangars that
are under construction had been receptive to a
figure of around one percent of the assessed
value of the plane for a tax amount.
Houser suggested looking at tax deductions
as a method of attracting more pilots to the air
port.
Perry mayor Jim Worrall suggested the
authority gel together with members of Perry
city council and the Houston County commis
sion to try to resolve the matter.
The two governing groups are counting on
receiving the taxes in an effort to help finance
the $250,000 loan that has been received by the
authority to pay for construction of 14 hangars
and other improvements at the airport.
Authority chairman Dana Dickson told his
colleagues that it costs more in taxes for his
plane to stay at the Perry-Houston County
Airport than it did to house it in California.
In other action, the authority took a look at
water at the airport, both for drinking and to aid
in fire protection.
‘We need to find some tanks to fill with
water so we will have them if we need to put
out a fire here," Houser said.
Danny Evans said they are looking for a
couple of tanks that could hold up to 10,000
gallons of water each and would be used il the
lire trucks from the city of Perry were to give
out of water in battling a blaze on the grounds.
Evans was instructed to see it he could find
some used tanks for that purpose.
On the drinking water situation, Houser said
he had found a man who offered to provide a
water filter system to help deal with the pH
problem that has gone on for a number of years
at the airport.
We w ill try the system for thirty days." said

flic airport manager >aid an Atlanta man
recently contacted him about building a corpo
rate hangar at the airport.
He must meet the minimum standards we
have established," said Dickson. "If he does
that, then vve could have a special meeting to
give him an answer to his request, so he would
n't have to wait a month to know something "

The authority gave the go-ahead to Houser
to enter into an agreement to have a satellite
television dish established at the new terminal
building when it opens in coming weeks.
Houser said that service would allow pilots
to find out about weather conditions at various
points of destination they might have.
"We need to have it if we are to be a top
notch airport." said Evans.
The dish could be installed for S3OO, with a
$64 monthly fee, according to Houser. That
charge could be split with the fixed base oper
ator. added Houser. Kirk Johnstone
