Kiwanians induct two members, learn Sports Center story
By PAULINE LEWIS
Lifestyle Editor
Don McFadden and Connie
Potter were inducted Oct. 22 into
the Perry Kiwanis Club by Earl
Cheek and Willie Tyson.
Guest speaker Monty Lowery,
comptroller of Perry Sports
Center, and active worker with
Boy Scouts, was introduced by
Emmett Whelchel.
Lowery gave a history of Perry
Sports Center, its different loca
tions, personnel changes, added
functions and sales items over the
years.
The business was begun in
1970 by Charles Ayer, an electron
ics technician at Robins Air Force
Base, and Sonny Heard. The busi
ness opened in Perry Plaza with
$1,500 and inventory.
The business expanded with
stores in Dublin and Savannah,
which were later sold and Kmart
Shopping Center in Perry was pur
chased, providing 52,000 square
feet of display space.
In 1988, the business was the

Making Communications Simple
world's largest seller of Johnson
brand outboard motors and has
been in the top 10 for marine out
board motors and top 10 in
Yamaha sales. Hunters and fisher
men’s supplies are great sales
items, Lowery said.
Perry Sports Center now has 29
employees and has a $6.5 million
impact on the area. Sales are
mainly in the Southeastern United
States. Items are bought in vol
ume, allowing price breaks for the
customers. Lowery said.
The owners’ aim is to keep
their customers satisfied. The
company sold 1,900 engines and
1.000 - 1,100 hulls last year and
sponsored a bass tournament with
two boats and clothing.
Charles Ayer has as his goal:
“Give customers what they want
at a price they can pay and keep
them satisfied.”
Started as a pencil and paper
business, it is completely comput
