Virginia Jones, who works in
data processing in the imaging
department downstairs at the
Bank of Perry, was honored Jan.
21 with a surprise breakfast party
for 45 years of service to the bank.
She was presented a complete
computer, something she has
wished for and is elated to be
learning to operate.
Virginia and Dot Oliver, who
has just two years less service at
Bank of Perry, laughingly say they
have worn out two buildings and
are starting on the third. I had to
stop and think. First the bank was
where Chapman and Rodgers
CPA is on the corner in the mid
dle of town and the second bank
was where PUMC Educational
Building is across from the
church.
Congratulations, Virginia.

At their Jan. 26 meeting Perry
Kiwanis Club members wanted to
especially thank Nancy Whiddon
and Mary Jo Zell of Perry High
School for their efforts in helping
to make the Kiwanis Talent

It was Cohen Walker’s birth
day, and to honor his good friend,
Earl Cheek passed around a
bright pink piggybank for dona

cost to feecf one person is 160 a
month.
Ted Rosebrock reported on the
men’s prayer breakfast begun in
1983 and held every Tuesday
morning 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. at New
Perry Hotel. Without a leader
since the departure to Macon of
Jim Shipley, five local ministers
have now agreed to share leader
ship of this gathering. Kiwanians,
as well as other Christian men in
the community, are encouraged to
share this hour. They order from
the menu and pay as they go.

We hosted our supper club for
a super bowl party Sunday
evening. Our special guests were
newlyweds Gordon and Doshia
Scarborough. Hors d’oeuvres and
drinks until halftime were fol
lowed by barbecued shrimp and
sauce in bowls with plenty of
crusty French bread for dunking.
Add a tossed salad by Dottie and
Dick Kistler and we had a memo
rable meal, if I do say so myself! If
only the Falcons could have
played a memorable winning
game!
Because our guests had to peel
the shrimp at the table, we served
this with lots of napkins and cov
ered the tables with
Falcon/Broncos sports pages of
newspaper.
One of our hors d’hoeuvres was
made by Jackie and Fred Klein
from year-end recipes in The
Macon Telegraph Food 8c
Nutrition. Very impressive and
delicious. You may want it for
your next party.
Pesto Torta
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
2 (8-ounce) packages cream
cheese
1 (8 to 10-ouncc) jar prepared
pesto, or homemade pesto
Sun-dried tomatoes and freshly
grated Parmesan cheese (garnish)
In food processor, blend butter
and cream cheese until creamy,
dividing into two batches if neces
sary. Line a gelatin mold, cake pan
or loaf pan with plastic wrap.
Beginning and ending with
cream cheese mixture, alternate 1-
inch layers of cream cheese mix
ture with pesto sauce, tapping
mold to let out air bubbles
between layers. Refrigerate 5 to
10 minutes between layers.
Repeat until mold is full.
Refrigerate 4 to 6 hours or
overnight to set. (Can be made up
to two weeks in advance.)
When ready to serve, invert on
a platter or tray and peel off plas
tic wrap. Garnish with sun-dried
tomatoes and grated Parmesan.
Serve with crackers, crostini (thin
slices of toasted French bread) or
raw vegetables.

Once before 1 gave the recipe
for Barbecued Shrimp. This time
I used one from Carolyn
Flournoy, Food Columnist, The
Times, Shreveport, La. She says,
“This recipe is thought to have
originated at Manale’s Restaurant
in New Orleans. Why they call it
Barbecued Shrimp, only one
long-gone chef would know.
Every good Louisiana cook has a
version of it in their repertoire.
This is mine.” Dick said it
reminded him of Shrimp Scampi.
Barbecued Shrimp
Makes 8 to 10 servings
5 pounds unpceled shrimp
1 1/2 cups butter (I used 10-fat
oleo, less greasy)
1 bottle (8 ounces) Italian salad
dressing
1/3 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup olive oil
2 to 3 cloves garlic, peeled and
minced
1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
2 to 3 tablespoons ground black
pepper, or more to taste
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Wash shrimp and drain well.
Melt butter in a 3-quart casse
role dish while you are preheating
overn to 350 degrees. Add salad
dressing, lemon juice, olive oil,
garlic, hot pepper sauce, black
pepper and Worcestershire sauce
to butter; stir to combine. Add
shrimp.
Bake, covered, in preheated
350-degree oven for 35 to 45
minutes, stirring occasionally so
all shrimp cook evenly. Shrimp
turn bright pink when done; be
sure all are completely cooked.
Note: This dish is equally good
reheated, but it should not be
frozen. Recipe can be halved,
using 2 1/2 pounds unpeeled
shrimp and adjusting other ingre
dients.
