and sliding on the road, not knowing
if you will end up in the ditch again, or
not.”
At the request of County
Commission Chairman J. Sherrill
Stafford, County Engineer Tommy
Stalnaker gave the assembled citizens
an overview of the process required for
a county road to be paved.
Stalnaker said the first require
ment was that all property owners
along the road be willing to give the
county the required right of way “free
and simple.”
He said that if all owners agreed to
give up the land required for the right
of way on either side of the road, the
next step would be a survey for align
ment of the road.
Stalnaker pointed out that at least
two of the curves in Davis Road
would have to be straightened out. He
also noted that with the state-required
80-foot fight of way, a number of
property owners would lose a substan
tial amount of land.

way too much.”
After on stage questions were

The right of way question was also
brought up by one of the property
owners, Alfred White Jr., who said
that he had 1,000 feet of water lines
and new fencing along the road, and
he wanted to know who would stand
the cost of moving the pipes and fenc
ing if the right of way was needed for
road paving.
Pointing out that he had lived on
the road for many years, White said
that he was not in support of paving
the road, but he conceded that it was
hard to travel on during periods of
excessive rain.
Stalnaker agreed with citizens who
argued that it would cost less in the
long run to pave the road than to
maintain it with regular scraping.
“We’d like to see it paved,” he said,
“It’s very expensive to maintain.”
Stafford asked that representatives
of the families who live on the road
meet within 30 days with
Commissioners Tom McMichael and
Larry Thomson to begin working
toward a solution to their problems.
