Georgia Power offers wildlife grants to local property owners Special tothk Times-lournal Beginning May 15, groups and individuals who own or lease land with Georgia Power trans mission lines in Houston County and 73 other Georgia counties may be eligible to receive caseh grants up to SIOO per acre along with professional wildlife man agement advice to create new wildlife lands beneath transmis sion lines. The program, launched by Georgia Power and the Two Rivers Council in 19996, is called Project WINGS. W.I.N.G.S. stands for Wildlife Incentives for Nongame and Game Species. Funded by Georgia Power and administered by Two Rivers, WINGS is a right S-of-way man agement campaign sponsored by a host of public and private orga nizations. Technical assistance is Srovided by the USDA Natural esources Conservation Service, the Georgia Department of Natural Resource Conservation Service, the Georgia Department of Natural Resource, the Georgia Forestry Commission and local conserva tion districts. Frank Jordon, Two Rivers President, explains the project goal this way: “Transmission rights-of-way must be routinely moved to pre vent tall growth from interfering with electrical lines. Project WINGS is designed to replace tall bushy growth with more desirable plant species which benefit wildlife. Participants receive customized management plans detailing choice plantings for wildlife and grant money to help carry out the plantings.
