opportunity to relate the blessings
of living in Perry, that life is a
journey through stages, of raising
southern gentlemen with the
emphasis on gentle, only the
strong can afford to be gentle
with serendipities in a world of
unexpected pleasures.
His memories of Norine
Swanson Jones and her influence
on children will be especially
awaited.
Jackie suggested the following
good reads and good authors:
V “Right From Wrong" by
Cindy Bonner for Algonquin
Books of two first cousins in
Texas who fall in love.
V “Vapors” by Wes DeMott
about an ex FBI agent, tough
two-fisted novel where they get
shot and wounded and sew them
selves up.
V “When I Fall in Love” by Iris
Ranier Dart, author of “Beaches”
V “A Place to Call Home” by
Deborah Smith
V “A New Song” by Jan Karon,
the fifth in a series of seven books
about life in a mountain town.
V “Rivers End” by Nora
Roberts
V “The Orphan Game” by
Ann Darby
Jackie related how pleasantly
surprised he was to see that his
review (by Jackie Cooper of the
Houston Home Journal) of Sidney
Sheldon’s “Windmill of the
Gods" appeared on the back cover
of Sheldon’s “The Sands ofTime”
back in 1988.
• Sure enough, by the second
edition they had discovered it was
not a Houston, Texas newspaper
review and his quote had been
removed.

The silent auction for the
Family Support Alliance for the
Mentally 111 was held at New
Hope Personal Living Center in
Warner Robins April 23. It was a
big success, raising more than
S7OO thanks to the generosity of
many who donated nice items for
auction.
In Perry that included Ace
Hardware, Card Carousel,
Impressions, WD Sullivan Sc Co.
and Curves for Women. Tina
Simms served as chairperson for
'••the event.
1 “For a meeting of FSAMI to
make plans for the auction, Tina
made a batch of cookies to serve
to her committee. She found the
recipe via her computer. Lucky
co-workers of her sis, Charlotte
Perkins at the Houston Times-
Journal, were able to taste test
before they were served. The
cookies passed with flying colors.

Michelle Golden and
Nathaniel Conley were married
by Judge Janice Spires on the
Courthouse lawn at 2:30 p.m.
April 23. The wedding party
caught my eye, she in a long white
gown with stole and he in his Air
Force blues accompanied by fam
ily members and friends.
Following a honeymoon trip to
Florida the 1998 graduates of
Houston County High and
Northsidc High will be living in
Missouri where Nathan will be
stationed at Whiteman Air Force
Base.
Did you know that Judge
Spires docs not charge for mar
riage ceremonies during office
hours? Instead, she and her staff
decided that Safe House would
be a wonderful recipient of
money when people insist on pay
ing.
Last week after reading in Just
Visitin’ that Janice Walker serves
as a member of the Advisory
Council for our local Family
Violence Shelter, she informed
Janice that marriage donations
will now be given through her for
Salvation Army Safe House.

Kim Hathcock and her sister,
Pam Roberts, returned Sunday
from a seven-day cruise with
Richard Simmons aboard the
Carnival cruise ship Sensation
from Tampa to Grand Cayman,
Cozumel and New Orleans,
Simmons’ hometown.
Some 400 of the 2,300 passen
gers were like Kim and Pam,
beginning their days at 7 a.m.
with stretching, breakfast, “project
me”, lurtch, exercise classes, free
time, dinner with evening ses
sions of stress relief and talks
about big weight loss from the
pros.
They enjoyed being led by the
Slimmons staff from Hollywood
and the group lost a total of 1,354
pounds during the week.
The cruise was bittersweet for
Kim and Pam who were on the
cruise for weight loss during the
fourth anniversary of their moth
er’s death. Her life might have
been spared if she had been less
heavy so that a tumor could have
been detected. Kim is a nutrition
manager at Quail Run
Elementary School and Pam is a
manicurist at The Hair Co. on
Northside Drive.
