Pylon:Surprise Attack
After a five year hiatus Pylon
made their triumphant return to
the stage at the 40 Watt on
Saturday, July 2nd. All of the
original members — Curtis Crowe,
Michael Lachowski, Randall Bewley
and Vanessa Briscoe-Hay — made
the show a special treat by
pumping out those familiar tunes
with enthusiasm and precision.
The legendary group decided to
disband for several reasons, with
the most imminent one being the
lack of a strong enough record
deal. There were rumors of a
Pylon reunion for the dB Records
Anniversary Party in Atlanta
during April. Those rumors were
unfounded even though the band
had been practicing for a while
together. They considered doing
it but felt they wanted to do a
private "rehearsal" type show
before they jumped back into a
large performance.
For years after the disbanding
no one in the band seriously
considered reuniting because each
felt the others would not or
could not do it. A lot of things
have changed over the years, and
they had too many
responsibilities in their
newfound "real" lives. Career
and family duties made it harder
and harder to even consider the
time and hard work it would 'take
to get Pylon on track for even a
one time reunion performance.
Curtis Crowe drummed sti*ll for
Final Frontier and even went to
New York recently to work with
the B52’s in the studio. He has
been incredibly busy over the
last few years in his own
business, a construction firm
that specializes in re-doing old
homes and redoing his own home
with his wife. Michael Lachowski
put his bass away after the last
gig and has not pulled it out•
from under his bed until the past
few months. He has been busy
with his job, his art and
filmaking, and has been DJ at the
clubs around town for the past
year. Randall Bewley took apart
all his guitars in a workroom in
his house to work on them and
left them there in pieces for
years. He has been too busy with
family life and career demands to
put them together till this year.
Vanessa Briscoe got married to
Bob Hay ffom the Squalls and got
promoted from part time employee
to store manager in her job.
Lately she has made new addition
to her family by having child.
Just last month she supervised
the opening of a new branch of
her employer and moved in as the
new manager also.
You get the picture. These
were busy folks caught up in the
changes of their lives from
students and musicians to adults
out there in the-real world.
They could have never played
again as they would stand as
legends locally and everywhere
they played. But they decided to
go out on a limb, to take a ,
chance that they might not have
