Brand spankin' new local rock band
The Ohms formed out of the remains of
underground band Camp David. Wes
McDonald, Jeff Buckley (the other one,
of course), Mark Eveces and Andrew
Heaton—all of whom switch off and on
between guitar, bass, drums and
random instruments—recently recorded
an impressively casual-sounding demo
disc under the name ''Science" and
officially became 'The Ohms" this
month. The deceivingly simple songs
suggest some heavy influences by The
Kinks, Velvet Underground and Camper STB (Sonia Tetlow Band)
Van Beethoven.
STB (also known as the "Sonia Tetlow Band") plays a brand of music it calls incendiary aait-
pop." Formed in Atlanta in early 1998 by guitarist-singer Sonia Tetlow, bassist Lee Kennedy and
drummer/woodwind player Becky Shaw, the trio established itself in Atlanta s dub scene as one
of the more edgy indie rock acts—oftentimes gamering comparisons to early-era Pret^nders,^
Berlin, The Stocges, Siouxsie & The Banshees and the Ellen James Sodety. The band has a 7"
vinyl release featuring the song "Close To Me" b/w "Madness and plans to release a full-length
this winter.
Come on, Athens. Get it together and check out some of these new acts while they're still
small time; you'll be glad you did. (BL)

Andent Harmony
Jam-rock band Ancient Harmony has been slowly
but surely sinking its teeth into the Athens hippie
rock scene since its first gig at the Boar's Head over
a year ago. Specializing in a flowing style of improv-
oriented, Southern-style groove rode with a technical
flare, the quartet formed in the mid-'90s in Albany,
Ga. The current line-up includes lead smger/guitarist
Shell Stamps, drummer Michael Cansl?r, bassist Steve
Patton and keyboardist/vocalist Hal Month.
"Shell and Michael were playing together in their home-town of Albany since they were
but the band really started becoming what it is now around late 1997,* explains Month,
relocated to Atlanta from his native New York. "We started breaking out of being
act into a professional touring act, worked through obstacles and developed a chemistry that
works and concentrated on developing ar approach that emphasized imp-ovisation."
While the band's sound draws heavily from Little Feat, the Grateful Dead, the AUrnan Brothers
and Santana, elements of swing, country-blues and folk meander in and out. The latest album is
an independent release titled Skywater. Listen for cuts on Atlanta radio station Z-93 s "In The
Living Room" on Sunday nights and look for a follow-up (most likely on an established record
label) later this year. Two Fisted Cool opens. (BL)
