You cannot step twice into the same river - ^
TAKE THE LOW ROAD This Saturday, June 3," try out the completed portion of the new North Oconee River Greenway. Join a group of people
who will gather in the Chicopee parting lot across the river at 8 a.m. to take a hike on the 1.7 miles of greenway along the North Oconee.
What you'll find is a broad new ribbon of concrete suitable for walking, jogging, bicycling and wheelchairing. The greenway will put you in
touch with the river and with an interesting urban hiking path. Take a walk and get a taste
of what will eventually be a 14-mile river walk from Sandy Creek Part to the confluence of
the North Oconee and the Middle Oconee below Athens. Call 613-3615 for more information.
A FUNGUS AMONG US > For the third or fourth time, Morris Communications, dba Athens
Newspapers is trying to solve the vexing problem of why their collection of columns at the
corner of Thomas Street and Broad Street can't hold a paint job. They've sanded and
patched and painted, but the finish quickly blisters, and soon the pavilion looks patchy
again. Maybe the Athens environment is rejecting Augusta materials.
COMMUNITY ISSUES Mayor Doc Eldridge met with members of the NAACP board of directors
Thursday afternoon. The only fireworks came from nature, as a lightning storm flashed and
cracked Outside while the group discussed minority employment, government support for several civic projects, the progress of several
SPLOST projects in the black community and, of course, the appointment of the new HED director. Present at the meeting with the mayor
were Fred Smith, Sr., Randall Merritt, Melvin C. Geter II, Ovita Thornton, Linda Lloyd and Margaret Martin.
