»™ ■■mi Friday, June 16 The Delta 72, The Rapture, The Causey Way 40 Watt Club Since forming as a trio in 1994, puckish PhiUy R&B/rock act The Delta 72 has recorded and released three full-length records on the Touch & Go label. The band has made an effort to recapture the wild, soulful sounds of classic R&8 and unleash it to the youngsters on a platter of aggression. The Delta 72's second album, 1998's The Soul Of A New Machine, marked the band's true arrival on the upper end of the American rock underground and garnered comparisons to Make Up and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. When The Delta 72 last played Athens in '98, lead singer Gregg Foreman continually hit his head on the disco ball banging from the 40 Watt Club ceiling above the stage. The current lineup—Foreman, keyboardist Mark Boyce (ex-Boss Hog, The Goats), drummer Jason Kourkounis (ex-Mule) and bassist Bruce Reckahn—are currently touring behind a new one titled 000. The rote, mysterious, Brooklyn-based, avant-rock quartet The Rapture plays a nervous brand of key- board-infused underground rock similar in tone and feel to early Pere Ubu, Kraftwerk and Talking Heads. The latest album. Minor (Gravity), is a shrill, spare collection filled with creepy sirens, organ sounds, analog noise and vocalist-guitarist luke Jennet's nervous shrieking, Florida's highly enjoyable, slightly politicized The Causey Way opens.
