n 4 1 **@11 “w^i. 1 2000 Flagpole Music Awards Show takes place at the Morton Theatre on Thursday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m.. This event officially kicks off the weekend's AthFcst music and arts festival. Last year's show was the first event of its kind in the long history of this town's music scene and established what is becoming an annual tradition designed to celebrate and honor the artists who make Athens a vibrant music scene. The interest surrounding the awards reflects the open ballot voting and sealed* envelope system, flagpole readers decide the winners by popular vote. The nominees are listed in this week's issue, see p. 22. The win ners axe not announced until their names are read by the celebrity presenters at the Awards Show. Flagpole received twice as many ballot submissions this year as last year, but the results will not be known until the envelopes are opened at the show. The ballots contained 22 musical cate gories, including rock, funk, country, blues, hip hop, vocal, techno, experimental, world, classical and soul, as well as best supporter of the music scene, best band to hear live and band of the year. And of course it was up to the music fans to decide what style of music most closely fits their favorite bands. Currently, there's more activity then ever and an exciting air of uncertainty pervading the Athens music community. If the scene is increasingly dominated by up-and-comers from numerous genres, there're still plenty of veterans in the running. The 2000 Flagpole •Athens Music Awards reflects these transi tional times. At this year's show (as at last year's), Flagpole editor and publisher Pete McCommons and music editor Ballard Lesemann—the "MCs-for-iife"“Will once again play ringmasters, with comic relief from a few surprise guests (sunglasses andvsarplugs are encouraged). The festivities will be greased by the well- oiled, returning house act, The Daniel Nettles Band, a veritable house party led by jazz gui tarist Daniel Nettles. The band dips its flask into a pool that includes jazz, bop, blues and soul and delivers a smooth, satisfying sound. flagpole has chosen a group of "charac ters" from the Athens community to present to the winners in each category an original, hand-made statuette crafted by local artist Pattiy Torno. As the presenters open their envelopes and announce the winners, a rota tion of "illustrated" stage assistants wilt escort the winners onto and off the stage. A glance at the genres mined by this year's Flagpole Athens Music Awards performers con firms the current scene's diversity: folk, clas sical, country, ja2z, country, guitar-rock and experimental pop. Look for sets (between 10 and 15 minutes in length) from acclaimed percussionist and educator Dr. Arvin Scott, the rambunctious Georgia Guitar Quartet, the countiy-crooning, honky-tonk kings The Star Room Boys, the netherworld-reaching, instru mental orch-pop ensemble Japancakes, and vital rock veterans Five-Eight. A video presen tation from the Nugi Phillips Memorial Foundation will be shown during intermis sion. The doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m.. During the show, refreshments, including beer and wine, will be for sale in the Pharmacy Room downstairs in the Morton, adjacent to the the ater lobby. Tickets to the awards show are on sale now at the Morton Theatre box office, Big Shot Records and at the Flagpole office, Ballard lesemann WHAT: The 2000 flagpole Athens Musk Awards Show WHERE: The Marlon Theatre WHEN: June 22 at 7:30 p.m. HOW MUCH; $4 (w/AthFesf 2'dey pass), $6 (adv.)/ Sft (door) CTTDDTIDT T/TTAT DnCTATTGCITCf INFORMATION IS OUR #1 PRODUCT Corner of Broad & Pulaski • Mon.-SaL 9:30am-7pm Summer School is IN!
