The band creates a cool sound unlike anything coming out of the South: a pulsing, rhythm-driven "theme" music resembling what might have sounded like an Ennio Morricone soundtrack to a David Lynch film. The Chapel Hill-based instrumental group formed nearly ten years ago under the guidance of guitarist Laird Dixon (ex-Zen Frisbee). The project underwent several shake-ups and name changes, but solidified its line-up in '95 vrth guitarist Scott Goolsby, cellist-bassist Chris Eubank, drummer Groves Wilier and banjo-fiddle player Sara BelL Since then, the band has quietly crafted a complex and delicate sound that dodges trappings of the Southern college-pop and clangy post-punk shenanigans that typify so many NC rock bands. The quintet's new album, Man On Stilts is due out August 8 on Merge Records. Whereas last year's Battle Of The Loons (Merge) lurked between cleanly recorded quirk-pop tunage and some thing more layered, sinister and complicated, the new nine-song slab glides at a more breezy pace, lilting between orchestral soundscapes and Fender guitar spaghetti picking. On both albums, there are always several interesting tilings going on simultaneously. Shark Quest's hard-hitting Tarheel colleagues in indie-rock quartet Starpoint Electric—who recently released a fine collection of anthemic and spaced-out rock gems titled Bad Directions (Plastique)—share the stage beforehand alongside local headliner Ceiling Fan. July 18 JAY BORCK Atlanta's Colonel Bruce Hampton is the revered "Daddy" of boogie music in America, particularly the South, and there's iust no telling what sort of musical mayhem and eccentric antic., one might witness when he gets together with some of his friends for a show. Hampton has been a constant presence in the Southern music scene since the late 1960s. He has performed in such conglomerations as The Hampton Grease Band, The Aquarium Rescue Unit and The Fiji Mariners—all of which blended an eclectic mix of bluegrass, gospel, swing, country and jazz. These days, in addition to work in the film and television industry (multiple movie appearances and voice-over work for Cartoon Network's "Space Ghost"), Hampton is touring as Colonel Bruce Hampton & Friends, playing regular weekend shows at Atlanta's Brandy House, and inviting such luminous friends as Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Mike Gordon, John Popper, Jon Fishman and Rob Wasserman to share the stage with him. Suffice it to say that the Colonel's "friends" are an ever-changing cast of talents who always cook up a musical stew that is jammy, somewhat unstructured and lots of fun.
