SUMMER READING PROGRAMS The Athens-Clarke
County Library continues its 2000 Summer Reading
Clubs. Kids up to age 11 can register for "Open a
Book... Jump In!" by picking up a folder at the
Children's Area desk. Readers can earn prizes and cer
tificates for reading the required number of books.
Young adults ages 11-18 can register for "Jump Into
Reading!" Prizes will by awarded for reading points
earned and the top three readers will receive gift cer
tificates to Barnes & Noble. The Summer Reading

MADISON THEATRE FESTIVAL The Madison-Morgan
Cultural Center hosts its annual Madison Fest 2000 in
conjunction with its 19th annual theater festival. The
event features a juried artists market, live music and

dren's activities and the peanut-powered tractor pull

ADA TORCH RELAY To celebrate the 10th anniversary
of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the
25th anniversary of IDEA, the major education act for
students with disabilities, the National ADA Torch
Relay will pass through Athens. Events begin as the
national relay, which is passing through Georgia on
its way to Washington, D.C., arrives at the ACC
Library, winds its way through downtown, and ends
in front of the ACC Courthouse on Washington St. A
block party celebration will feature live entertain
ment from Pam Blanchard and the Sunny-Side Up
Band and educational and informational booths and
activities, followed by the presentation of the torch
to Mayor Doc Eldridge. Downtown Athens on Sunday,

Winder is hosting an all
day chili cook-off and
zydeco music festiva 1 fea
turing the whole Carrier
clan from Louisiana. The
day begins with an
International Chili
Society-sanctioned chili 25th Anniversary and 15th
and salsa cook-off. Prizes
will be awarded and the winner moves on to the
semi-finals in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Carrier Family
Zydeco Festival starts at 2 p.m. and the festival stage
will be set in the middle of all the booths, activities
and entertainment. Roy Carrier and the Night
Rockers, Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band,
Troy Carrier of Dikki Du & the Zydeco Crew and
Dwight Carner and the Zydeco Ro' Dogs are all sched
uled to perform. A documentary film crew will be on
site for this special event. A portion of the proceeds
benefit The Children's Advocacy Center in Winder.

GEORGIA GAMES TORCH RUN The torch carriers for
the 2000 Georgia Games, scheduled to begin July 21

The Theatre festival features two plays by award-win
