Oevar-e and Rade Serbedzija. (Beechwood, Carmike) SPROUT WINGS AND FLY (NR) 1983 A heartwarming documentary about Appalachian tiddler Tommy Jarrell. Directed by Les Blank. (Afhens- Clarke Library) THOMAS AND THE MAGIC RAIL ROAD (G) The incredibly popular chil dren's television series, “Thomas The Tank Engine And Friends’ and “Shining Time Station" hits the big- screen in this part live-action, part ani mated new film. Eleven-year old Lily (Mara Wilson ol Matilda) finds hersell in the scenic town of Shining Time atter she takes the wrong train on a visit to see her grandpa (Peter Fonda), a once happy railway engi neer who now lives a solitary life. In Shining Time, Lily meets Mr. Conductor (Alec Baldwin) and embarks with him on an adventure via the Magic Railroad to an island toy world. (Rebecca Lake) (Beechwood. Carmike) WHAT LIES BENEATH (R) Director Robert Zemekis' (Contact, Forrest Gump) troublesome supernatural thriller starts out like a creepy love letter to Hitchcock, but suffers from too many preposterous contnvances and eventu ally ends up like a Friday The 13th sequel. Micheile Pfeifler and Harrison Ford are apparently a wealthy, happily marned Vermont couple, but trouble comes after their daughter's exit to col lege. The film effectively builds up to some very frightening moments— shifting from eerily slow-moving scenes set in silent, empty foyers and steam- filled bathrooms to extreme action and horror—but unfortunately relies too heavily on the new trick of startling the audience with a loud, sudden blast of orchestral accentuation. Clark Gregg’s flaky script could have used a few rewrites as well. You'll either love it or hate it. With Diana Scarwid. Joe Morton and Amber Valletta (Beechwood. Carmike) WHERE THE HEART IS (PG-13' Natalie Portman plays a perky, pregnant teen stranded by her hick boyfriend at a Wal-Mart in a small Oklahoma town With Ashley Judd, Stockard Channing, Joan Cusack. James Fram and Keith David. Ends Thursday. (Mall) X-MEN (PG-13) Based on the popular Marvel Comics comic hook series, director Bryan Singer's (The Usual Suspects) latest is ar. entertaining but slightly unbalanced first entry in what is certain to become a sci-fi superhero franchise. The movie spends a lot of lime introducing its audience to each character and offers more than a lew heavy-handed thematic overtures to the Holocaust, human evolution and neo- McCarthysm. The two main characters are misfit “superior" humans who, for some reason or other, have obtained and hai.^essed special powers such as telepathy, telekinesis, extraordinary phys ical strength or more violent talents At the center of the story are Rogue (Anna Paquin), a confused young woman afraid of her power to absorb the memories of others by touch and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), a gruff tough guy with a complicated past, keen senses and a skeleton enhanced by unbreakable metal. The good guys, led by Professor X (Patrick Stewart), include Jean Grey (Famke Janssen). Cyclops (James Marsden), and Storm (Halle Berry). The villains are led by Professor Xs old friend-turned- liend Magneto (Ian McKellan). and include Toad (Ray Park). Sabretooth (Tyler Mane) and Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-S:amos). Whew Much of the script is smart and brisk with few corny one-liners, and the story gradually builds great intensity, but the final scenes are a bit anticlimactic and rid dled with lame fight sequences P ans will love this. Others may frown in con fusion. (Beechwood. Carmike. Commerce Drive-In) localcoLor domestic arts & perfect gifts 193 E. Clayton St. 543-7392 ^BLES • DINING ROOM TABLES • COFFEE TABLfj, f S WAP !
