Thursday, August 10 AZTEC RADIO (Boar’s Head) Laid- back, good-vibe, 70s rock. This Athens band just finished a demo at Chacmool Studio. BRYAN STONE & BLAKE BRYANT (Allen's) Acoustic rock, folk and country standards and originals. CHUBBY (Tasty World) Through all of the 1990s, Beantown songwriter Dennis Brockenborough played trombone and sang back-up with the hard-hitting ska- rock band The Mighty Mighty Boss- tones. This is his full-on new project. Don’t expect a brass-driven “ska’ thing from this quartet at all: Chubby is much more of straightahead alt-rock band in the sorta vein of The Cars, Foo Fighters and Frank Blank. The band is also hit ting this week's Atlantis Music Conference in Atlanta. D’AREY OCTOBER (Caledonia) Peppery “power pop’ alt-rock from West Lawn. PA. This trio—fronted by devilish vocalist-guitarist D’arey—is touring behind a crankin’ new one called Guide To Teenage Glamour (215}—an 11-song collection drawing from the Smashing Pumpkins-meets-Pretenders corner of rock. DJ SUPRFLYY (AMF) A dance night filled with funky, old-school disco faves. MIKE ILL (Tasty World) Working-class folk music gets tossed through the old- school punk rock chasm in this New Jerseyite’s music. Currently on another swing through the South behind a weird new CD/Booxlet titled Antifolk Road Manual Volume 1: Punk/Blues. FIELD TRIP (Georgia Theatre) An Athens-based Southern-groove rock band with a rotating lineup. JEREMY JOEL (DTs) Local acoustic guitarist and vocalist delivering easy going classic rock standards and a few originals. “KINDERCORE EXPO 2000” (40 Watt) Featuring: Kincaid, Babalu, Tullycraft, Kings Of Convenience, Masters Of The Hemisphere, The Essex Green and Of Montreal. See pp. 20 and 24 for the scoop. LAST DAY DOWN (Georgia Theatre) This Athens band plays a mix of Southern-tinged grooves and blues- rock. “LEC7RICK LOUNGE" (Boneshakers) Dance night starting at midnight after the cabaret act. NATIONAL ANTHEM (Caledonia) This Athens quartet constantly delivers some of the most severe hard rock shows in town. Expect some electrified, souled- out boogie and blues. Look for the band's debut album out in early October. S66 p ^9 “100% PRODUCTIONS PRE SENTS” (Mean Mike’s) “Hype Thursday’ includes house and trance. 10 p.m. PARAKEET NELSON (Georgia Theatre) Local guitarist Chris Cates (sometime known as “Mealtime Brown’ or “Parakeet Nelson’) fronts this unpre dictable rock ensemble. Word has it that Cates will collaborate with his funky brethren out of Phallic Phungus—all of whom just returned from a big tour of Germany. SALLY & THE GUYS (Klassics) This local band describes its set ol covers and originals as “rock and roll dance music.’ ' SOLAR (Tasty World) A newly-formed pop-rock quartet formed by guitarist- vocalist Chao Garrett and members of the jazzy Atlanta band Grout. See p. 23. Friday, August 1) CARLTON OWENS CONSPIRACY & NEAL PATTMAN BAND (AMF) Drummer Carlton Owens regularly con ducts collaborative improvisational ses sions alongside several kev Athens players. Harpist and singer Neal Pattman, 74, is one of Georgia’s most revered traditional blues artists. Watch out for some sizzle from guest vocalist Clarence Cameron! “CIRCUIT NOISE” (Boneshakers) Dance night off Thomas Street with DJ Kellie. DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS (Tasty World) One of the shming stars of the Athens rock scene. Singer-guitarist Patterson Hood and his gang of gut-punchers have been touring like madmen all year. Tonight’s opening set wi'l feature songs fiom the forthcoming Lynyrd Skynyrd opera. Alabama Ass Whuppin', as well as favorites off the quartet’s first two miohty albums. THE GLANDS (Caledonia) This Athens rock band continues to evolve from what was initially a studio project between drummer Joe Rowe and gui tarist Ross Shapiro into something vital. The band's excellent sophomore release, The Glands (Capricorn), was released in stores last week. See p. 19. JACKPOT CfTY (Caledonia) A highly- melodic Athens pop-rock quartet that has been busily writing, recording and jamming with an additional member, guitarist Jay Ring. Think Big Star, The Beatles and The Pretenders. See p. 19. JULIE POWELL TRIO (Flicker) Free- jazz and improvisational folk, pop and rock. 8:30 p.m. See p. 23. “KINDERCORE EXPO 2000" (40 Watt) Featuring: The Mystery Band, The Four Comers. DAN (Georgia Theatre) Atlanta- based, bespectacled keyboard wiz ’Dr. Dan’ Matrazzo has played alongside the likes of Jeff Sipe (AKA “Apt. 0258’), Clarence “Gatemouth’ Brown, Col. Bruce Hampton (in the Fiji Mariners), Widespread Panic, Leo Kottke, Taj Mahal, Morphine, Phish and countless others. The maestro has a brand new album out called Dan On The Moon (Terminus). Quite possibly the gig of the week for insatiable, w .oove-lovin’ music fans familiar with anything from Zappa, MM&W, George Duke and Dr. Seuss. FUZZY SPROUTS (Georgia Theatre) The unpredictable, psycho Athens funk- rock trio—chosen as ‘Best Groove- Rock/Funk Band" nt this summers Flagpole Athens Music Awards— recently released its long-awaited live album, Fuzzy Sprouts Picture Show. KIT HOLMES (Garden Room Cafe) Singer-songwriter performing at the cate at tne State Botanical Garden. 12 noon- 2 p.m. “KINDERCORE EXPO 2000” (40 Watt) Featuring Summer Hymns, CAR., Marshmallow Coast, Junioi Varsity, Dressy Bessy, Birdie and The Sunshine Fix. See p. 20 for the scoop. MONDO HEPTET (Chip’s) Formerly known as The League Of Decency, this band handles a hot mix of electric blues. R&B and rock. 9 p.m. MR. L (Winery) A heralded, newly- formed local jazz trio (piano, bass, drums) specializing in straight-ahead jazz standards and a few Medeski, Martin & Wood-style funk-soul jams. THE POSSIBILITIES (Caledonia) This twangy, melodic Athens rock quintet can boil a pop song down to the bare bones and kick it around like beer-crazed mods on a tear through the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. The self-titled debut is out now from Backbumer Records. See p. 19. SALLY & SIX GRAND (Klassics) Rock and Top-40 covers THE TOM COLLINS & DAVID BAPBE (Caledonia) Guitarist Fran Capitanelli, drummer Kyle Spence and bassist Craig McQuiston comprise this raw, hard-hitting, offbeat rock trio based out of Atlanta and Athens. The band will be backing up Athens luminary David Barbe (formerly of Mercy land. Buzz Hungry and Sugar). Expect a powenul set consisting entirely of melodic, emo tionally tarnished, Barbe-penned tunes filled with dual-guitar and frightful rhythm action. Seep. 19. Sunday, August 13 CARLTON OWENS CONSPIRACY (AMF) Top-notch Athens drummer Carlton Owens’ (Squat) regular collabo rative jam session gets jazzy this week. KEVN KINNEY (Chip's) Singer-gui tarist Ke. a Kinney may be best known for his worx in Atlanta-based rock trio Drivin’N’Cryin’. 4 p.m. CHRIS MOORE (Locos West) The Athens-basecLSinger-songwriter (and guests) will play tuns off of Moore's fine new album, Freaks And Stones. S.M.O. (Locos West) This Athens rocx band has indeed established itself in the region with a hard-hitting, guitar-pow ered sound infused with funk and soul. Monday, August 14 JOHN BARRERE (Boar's Head) Groove-oriented rock and roll. Covers and originals. “BLUE MONDAY” (AMF) The weekly ' blues night’ series continues with local blues ensemble Little Bag from 8:30 p.m. “til 10 p.m. and action-packed house band Don’t Know from 10 p.m. til late. THE COLD PROCESS (Mean Mike’s) This riff-heavy, grunge-flavored Athens rock trio has been playing smaller clubs in and around Athens for the last two years. The sound is a mix of hard-edged “in-your-face" Southern rock, grunge and pop. PATRICK CONNELL (Allen’s) Local singer-songwriter. Originals and stan dards. THE ED KEMPER TRIO (40 Watt) This heavy-hitting post-punk rock trio from Montgomery, AL. “is not quite noise rock; not quite punk rock; not quite heavy rxk... it’s a unique, engaging amalgam of all this." THE F-HOLES (Tasty World) An acoustic ensemble with a common love for mountain string music that creates its own unique interpretation of blue- grass and old-time styles. THE GOODS (Tasty World) This Athens band plays a mostly instrumental mix of jazzy lunk, reggae and rxk. MOONEY SUZUKI (Caledonia) This NYC quartet loves to stomp out the nos talgic ‘60s and Mod styles with a toxh of VU and MC5 thrown in.
