LOST & FOUNDRY
The more things change, the more they remain the same.
CHAMBER OF HORRORS Our Athens-Area Chamber of Commerce seems determined to prove that it just doesn't get it when it comes to all
the fuss about good urban design and bad suburban visual pollution. At the same time that it is lobbying the ACC Commission on behalf of
weakening the land use plan, the Chamber is ready to start its own new building, incorporating on Hancock Avenue downtown all the worst
features of mall sprawl. The r.ew Chamber building, alongside another new one by insurance agent Ricky Chastain, will apparently ignore the
opportunity to create a downtown cityscape and instead junk up the east end of downtown with parking-heavy, detached buildings, com
plete with a Carmike-like eight-foot concrete retaining wall on Dougherty Street. With boosters like the Chamber, who needs Oconee County
to show us just how grim "progress" can be?
SHOCKED, SHOCKED The University of Georgia is reeling from the revelation that Greek fraternities and sororities discriminate on the basis
of race (in addition to every other basis known to man and woman). Surely there must be some mistake. Surely the university administration
is correct in apparently assuming that behind all those lily-white groups out on the lawn there's a whole bunch of black sisters you just
never see. Once this shock is absorbed, maybe it will be time to take another look at why there are so few African- American students at the
university anyway.
DONT FORGET The Moore's Ford Memorial Committee uses a horrible 1940s lynching to remind us that the fight against racial prejudice and
violence never ends. So, remembei the Committee's Jazz & Blues Sampler at the Morton Theatre Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m., featuring
Steve Dancz with the UGA Jazz Band and the great bluesman Neal Pattman. The $10 ticket funds the Committee's college scholarship pro
gram.
