The band- fronted by Hart Littlejohn and featuring ex-members of SKXZBXX and other Lowcountry acts—has a sound that draws from the likes of GBV, Petty and Wilco. The gritty Palmetto State antithesis to Jump. Little Children and Hootie & The Blowfish. APPALACHIA (Georgia Bar) Local gui tarist John Heath and hammer dulcimer expert Mark Garner describe this quartet as “majestic groove-folk with a myste rious lyrical emphasis." ’‘ARSON" (Firehouse) A weekly series of dance parties at this Clayton Street venue every Wednesday evening 11 p.m. A FEW LOOSE SCREWS (AMF) Local guitarist Byron Dillard and vocalist Ashley Miller front this countri fied pop band and play mostly classic and modem rock. LAST DAY DOWN (AMF) This Athens band plays a mix of Southern-tinged grooves and blues-rock The band recently released a debut album titled Boulders In The Rock Patch (featuring the vocal crooning of guitarist Ferrill Gibbs). THE OHMS (Caledonia) The Ohms formed out of the remains of under ground band Camp David. Wes McDonald (who recently released an excellent solo album tilled Alarm Clock Recordings). Jeff Buckley. Mark Eveces and Andrew Heaton—all of whom switch off and on between guitar, bass, drums and random instruments. The deceivingly simple songs suggest some heavy influences by The Kinks. Velvet Underground and Camper Van Beethoven. Office favorite: “Beerbelly." Singer Johnny Throckmorton, guitarist Asechiah "Cleetus LeRoque" Bogden, bassist Sam Krivanec and drummer Bryan Cox are touring behind their third album, Constellation. BOB (Caledonia) Guitarist-keyboardisl- singer Rich Hudson has been writing, recording and performing his own unique style of rock and post-rock since the early-’90s. DAN (Georgia inealre) Atlanta- based keyboard wiz Dr Dan" Malrazzo has played alongside the likes of Apt. Q258, Clarence “Galemouth" Brown, Col Bruce Hampton (in the Fiji Mariners), Widespread Panic. Leo Kotlke. Taj Mahal. Morphine. Phish and countless others. The maestro has a brand new album out called Dan On The Moon (Terminus). CHRIS MOORE & DAVID ROWE (One Love) Athens-based singer-song writer Chris Moore has recently been collaborating with David Rowe, known lor his work in recently-deceased pop- rock band Deacon Brody. PLUGSPARK SANJAY (Caledonia) This New Jersey indie rock band— fronted by singer-guitarist Joe Centeno—hails from the scene between NYC and New Brunswick The long haired quartet cranks out a swirling, wall-of-guitar sound that fils in nicely nest to Dinosaur. Jr. Burma and early- era Flaming Lips. The new one is called Regular Pinto (Childlike). STEVIE T (Tasty World) This Atlanta- bred singer-guitarist used to play in the Graveyard-rock band The Tombstones These days he plays bluesy, country- based songs and Southern rock ballads with a similar edgmess. His latest record is tilled Second Hand Sin. THROTTLEROD (Engine Room) Heavy-ass aft-rock GORDON WHITE (DT's) Local acoustic singer-songwriter Rock covers and originals. HANK WILLIAMS III (40 Walt) This singer-guitarist lives up to his famous namesake by shuffling through vintage Western swing, traditional country, and fiery, punkish rock and roll. His top- notch backing band—possibly called "Ass Jack"—includes The Jesus Lizard's Duane Denison on lead guitar. The new album is titled Risin'Outlaw (Curb). See p. 26. MICHAEL WINGER (One Love) This talented veteran Athens singer-song writer made a name through the ‘90s as the singer-guitarist in the quirky att-pop band Dayroom. He celebrates the release of his debut solo album tonight! See p. 23. Friday, October 6 ADAM PAYNE BAND (One Love) This local folk-rock band recently compiled a bittersweet album of songs titled Sorry, Try Again—a collection of acoustic bal lads and low-key pop tunes.
