Thursday, October 5 The Derek Trucks Band Georgia Theatre Slide-blues guitar prodigy and rock improvisationist Derek Trucks, 21, returns to Athens this week with a solid new band after an extremely busy summer of touring alongside his uncle, drummer Butch Trucks with and without the Allman Brothers. The Derek Trucks Band has toured heavily behind two albums that infused a variety of musical styles—from traditional blues and Southern rock to jazz, fusion and world music. Lately, the band has expanded from blues-rock toward an improv-heavy mix of Eastern influences and pro gressive jazz. The solidified lineup includes Trucks, flautist-keyboardist Kofi Burbridge, drummer Yonrico Scott, bassist Todd Smallie and vocalist Javier Colon. "The feel and sound of the band is exactly the same in many ways," says Colon, speaking by telephone from his home in Massachusetts. "A regular set has a little bit of blues and a little Latin in there as well as jazz and fusion. It's this great combination of styles that draws a very diverse crowd." A recent Hartt School Of Music graduate. Colon signed on as singer just two months ago. "I wouldn't consider myself the frontman; it’s not like that in this band," he says. "It's more a team effort and not the kind of thing where the spotlight is ever on one particular person. When we improvise, we listen to each other carefully and everybody gets a chance to do their thing. It's more of an ensemble and less like a bunch of individuals playing at each other on stage." The band features Sina on guitar, Nila on bass and Clementine on drums. They describe them- sel.es as "women who can talk carburetors and whiskeys, drive fast and take no prisoners... women who swagger... women built to carry gear." The band is currently in the midst of a nationwide "Monster Tour" that launched in February 2000 and really hasn't let up since. The latest album is titled Made In Voyage (Mudflap). The local rabble-rousers in loud'n'heavy band Urban Henry (AKA "Bourbon Henry") welcome their new bassist Brian Sweeney for his debut gig, furthe r solidifying the notion that good things sometimes do happen to those familiar with the Volcano Suns.
