LOST & FOUNDRY Kudzu is beginning to wilt. MEA CULPA In last week's column on the Oudley Park rail trestle, I stated that no one on the Commission "balked" at the announcement that the trestle is now being considered only as a Greenway "interpretive site," rather than as a bike and pedestrian bridge across the park. After talking with others who were at that agenda setting session, I realize I was incorrect. Commissioner John Barrow did, in fact, earnestly question whether all possible uses for the trestle had been explored, and if the Commission was being given enough information to make an informed decision on whether or not to purchase it. I completely misinterpreted Commissioner Barrow's comments, and for that I apologize. (Brad Aaron) SUITS THE 7TH? Local activist Michael Collins has announced two years ahead that he is running as an Independent against District 7 ACC Republican Commissioner Linda Ford in the Nov. 5, 2002 General Election. Collins originated the annual Human Rights Festival here over 20 years ago and has been active in citizens-rights issues ever since, including the Edward Wright Memorial Festival. Collins, says he has bought a Brooks Brothers suit and a haircut and he is serious about the campaign. He announced early to allow time for voter education and registration. He grew up in Linda (Piper) Ford's hometown of Elberton, where he says he lived on the "other side of the tracks" from Linda, the daughter of a dentist. Collins pledges a campaign based on a seven-point platform aimed at stopping urban sprawl, keeping the Greenway green, letting the Mayor vote, stopping the systematic displacement of African-Americans, recognizing the economic contribution of the emerging Latino population, registering UGA students to vote and empowering the people of Athens-Clarke County through voter reg istration, townhall meetings and other community events. Hey, that's the way it's supposed to work. If you don't like the way the ballgame is going, step up to the plate.
