LOST & FOUNDRY What goes 'round comes 'round. THROWDOWN One of the items lost on my part of Foundry Street is that genetic makeup that allows one to see in George W. Bush a leader. At the same time, I know there are many (slightly less than half the voting populace) who don't want to see Albert Gore, Jr„ as a leader. After careful consideration and mind-numbing amounts of CNN, I have come to the conclusion that it is in the best interests of the country for Al Gore to get the presidency. I won't try to spin you about just desserts. I just believe thai this standoff is bringing to the surface the kind of residual millennial survivalist personality that lurks within approximately 36 percent of registered Republicans. If Bush gets it, they'll simply fade back into the party infrastructure while Bush goes about playing the Presidential role for his father's ready-made government. But I think that if Gore should somehow get it, a whole lot of Republican operatives would take it as a signal that Armageddon has arrived and would grab their arsenals and head for the woods or the subways or the mountains—whatever is nearest. Things would get awfully messy (some of them might head for Foundry Street) but I think in the long run it would be better for the country to have that boil lanced. If Bush gets it, I don t think many Democrats will flip out and head for the communes. But the whole thing seems to be genetic, and unless you're of a similar makeup, you didn't read this far anyway. Read instead my bumper sticker: "Don't Blame Me: I Voted Against Bush." SHOWDOWN Well, supposedly the Alhens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission will vote sometime during the Tuesday, 7 p.m. Dec. 5 meeting, to adopt the enabling ordinances that will make the land use plan law. Apparently the plan has been watered down to the point where it is acceptable to real estate agents and their agents on the Commission, but not to all the citizens who worked for three years to get a true "smart growth' plan. One can assume that the Mayor, as usual, is working behind the scenes, but one no longer knows toward what end.
