Dredg Saturday, May 31 Dredg, S.T.U.N., Codeseven, Strata 40 Watt Club The small Northern California community of Los Gatos is where the members of Dredg grew up, went to school and learned to play their instruments. While still young the boys of Dredg found their musical experiences broadened by acts like Sepultura. Pink Floyd and Miles Davis. Performing together for nearly 10 years, singer/ mandolin man Gavin Hayes, guitarist Mark Engles, bassist Drew Roulette and drummer/keyboardist Dino Campanella released 1997'$ Orph EP, and in 1999 dropped the 10-track concept album Leitmotif (which got a wide, big-label-frilLs- and-all Interscope release in 2001). Dredg's currently touring in support of last year's El Cielo. El Cielo takes the stoner-cum-hardcore-rocker drone of Leitmotif and practically turns it on its side. While Dredg's earlier work maintained a no-vocals policy, the band's latest incorporates voices, sure, but tons more—there are drum circles, Bulgarian chants, broken thrift-store trumpet solos, drum'n'bass-inspired breaks, strings, dulcimers, spacey sound effects and Latin rhythms. All this from a band whose sound manages to fit itself somehow, somewhere between Pink Floyd and TooL Huh. Dredg employed numerous producers on El Cielo; Ron St. Germain (Tool, Creed), Tim Palmer (U2, Pearl Jam), and Jim Scott (Red Hot Chili Peppers) all chipped in. Says frontman Hayes in the band's press release: "We wanted to work with different collaborators because we wanted diversity. We don't fit in a box. We don't like it when every song on an album sounds the same—same guitar tone, same drum sound. It starts to sound like the same song over and over. By no means did we want to make a standard album." [CH] continued from page 15 CAFETERIA (Flicker) Excepl for a party show two weeks back, this local all- counlry group hasn’t played a show in over a year.
