“Battle @ the Lounge”
Caledonia Lounge
Is it too far of a jump to
compare Athens' current hip-
hop scene to the early '80s rock
scene? The performers know each
other, the fens know each other,
crowds are supportive of the
idea of Athens hip-hop—in the
abstract as well as specific art
ists—and the tight-knit scene is
slowly diversifying. "We're bring
ing in more and more emcees,
and it really is diverse," says
Montu Miller of AthFactor Entertainment, a local company behind the monthly "Battle @ the
Lounge" hip-hop event Says 3onn Vereen, a local producer and cofounder of AthFactor, "The
goal is to have a showcase of talent, emcees who are talented and hungry to get out there."
"Battle (5) the Lounge" is an evolution of "Battle Lounge," a less ambitious emcee battle
series from several years ago. This weekend's is the fifth installment, and all previous events
but one have sold out, a feet few rock bills at the Caledonia can boast. A showcase of local
and regional talent, this month's "Battle @ the Lounge" will spotlight Nothing But Cash,
the new local duo of The Renegadez's 1000 Gramz and Chicago transplant Bap; A.D., a young
emcee with a rapid-fire style; The Canz, the formerly Athenian duo of Prominent and Foster,
two Ghana-born rappers who in 2005 delivered the impressive but under-the-radar debut disc
Culture Shock; and Deaf Judges, the hydra-headed hip-hop conglomeration between Old White
Women, Produce Man and Rorshak.
Every "Battle @ the Lounge" features one performer in particular, generally concurrent
with the release of a new album or mixtape: Travis Williams and Bear, for instance, have cel
ebrated their respective releases at these events. This week's installment finds longtime local
emcee Mystro dropping his mixtape Digital Camouflage, showcasing his street-poet style and
early releases of tracks featuring Ishues, Badkat and Too Complicated. Miller hosts the eve
ning, with music provided by the reliable DJ Bulldog Purp. Our hip-hop scene is slowly (and
for the most part surely) growing; this monthly showcase is your best bet for catching a wide
variety of talent under one roof. [Chris Hassiotis]
