LONDON CALLING ANOTHER YEAR (PG-13) What a pair! Mike Leigh and Cine know how to warm up a chilly winter weekend even better than the Super Bowl. Another February, another of 2010's great films finally brought to Athens by Cine. Another Year is another sincere drama from Leigh, the master of social realism. To wax briefly effusive, Leigh is arguably Britain's greatest living film maker, and he vies for a spot near the top of that nation's all-time list. His dramas—Secrets & Lies being the most familiar—concern real people: Britain's under class of undereducated and underemployed. He employs a reliable troupe of terrific British actors, represented in Another Year by Jim Broadbent, Ruth Sheen, Lesley Manville, Peter Wight, Phil Davis, Imelda Staunton and more. Another year in the life of blissfully mar ried Tom and Gerri (Broadbent and Sheen) means another year caring for their less happy friends and family. Poor Mary (Manville, who has a virtuoso drunk scene) is afraid of get ting older alone so she makes a desperate pass at any available male, besides Tom and Gerri's out-of-shape university buddy, Ken (Wight), who is smoking and drinking himself to an early grave. The terrific couple have a terrific, 30-something son, Joe (Oliver Maltman), who just can't seem to meet the right girl. As the seasons turn, the stalwart duo work in their allotment, cook delicious meals and take care of everyone else; no Hollywood melodrama is required to move their lives along. This lovely couple is made even more so by another perfect performance by Broadbent and an equal turn by Sheen. Manville garnered the awards buzz, and though she sparkles through a haze of cigarette smoke, white wine and' disappointment, the .film suffers when the denouement shifts the focus to a sad, dishev eled Mary. Knowing Leigh's col laborative style of film- making, it is funny to see him receive a fifth Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Sure, he wrote what is seen on screen, but only after months of one-on-one preparation and improvisational workshopping with his fine stable of actors. I guess nominating the entire cast for Best Writing would be rather odd, and the beautiful, talky Another Year deserved some kind of industry recognition. See it for yourself, and you'll understand why.
