Clayton St.) H densely stocked with stacks of books, but the cozy shop also displays artwork in nearly the same abun dance. Now through mid March, paintings and collage by locals Jeff Owens, Rachel Cafeamss and Kenny Aguar cover much of the store. The collection of Jeff Owens paintings is pulled from 2004-2007; works on neatly con strutted wooden boxes from the "The C PIT Arcade" series (2004-2006). newer drawings on plywood from the "lusty Gantry Ranch" series (2006-2007) and two small ink and acrylic paintings on paper (2006-2007). (See this issue s cover for an example of Ns latest work.) The retro sci’ft feel of Owens' paint ings seems inspired by midnight movies circa 1966. Classic arcade game consoles, hybrid monsters and human machine creatures set against minimal backgrounds are tiie focus of much of Ns worn. As a talented illustrator With a distinctive style, he succeeds in giving Ns creatures a sense of emotional intensity <*«d pathos. Them may be a 6-movie influence hem. but Owens artwork rises above mere kitsch. Van Oaten chose the massive walls of the Miller learning Center (48 Beater St.) at UGA for her latest project, taking advantage of the expanse Of nondescript cream-colored plaster as her canvas, "f ragmented light" is ambitious in scale, yet uses everyday colored masking tape to create a dynamic effect (see the main Calendar image). Covering the walls of the MiUer learning Center's third and fourth floor stairwell, brightly colored lines reach high to the ceiling to create a seme of mbrant energy Hot pink, blue, neon green. Mack, traffic-cone orange and yellow tape grow more layered and densely patterned as one r ends the stairs; the vnnd colors seem to hum against the neutral background.
