7 -matic ILASKI STREET STAGE r, June 24, 7:45 p.m. . IEE To look through the discography of Will Johnson, lead singer and songwriter for Texas band Centro-matic, well, it would wear most out just about producing that much material. Although the band only started as a side-project for Johnson way back in *95. since then they’ve put out 10 IPs plus several EPs... plus, there are the two full-lengths Johnson put out as South San Gabriel, Centro- matic's more introverted sister band made up of the same members. jPLUS Johnson has put out several solo efforts. But Johnson and Co. have other talents besides juggling projects: they also piay some damn fine Texas-fried, poppy grunge rock. With a mix of lo-fi garage drums, fuzzed-out guitars, Johnson’s ten- derty growling Tex-twang and his often indie-pop-esque sense of melody, Centro-matic has found the recipe for successful tunes that keep the In the studio and on the road, with fairly frequent stops in Athens. Johnson's ties to Athens run even deeper as he has collaborated with local acts Orive-By Truckers and the late Vic Chesnutt. So, while Centro-matic may hail from that other cool music town about 1,000 miles west of here, they’ve got the resume, the repertoire and the connections to be called locals just for the weekend.
