Matt Pond PA,
Rocky Votolato
40 Watt Club
Thirteen years, nine
albums, eight EPs and
plenty of singles later,
Matt Pond feels like
he's getting the hang
of what he does. "I'm
reinvigorated to do it,"
he says, speaking of the
tour his semi-epony
mous band, Matt Pond
PA, has coming up with
solo troubadour Rocky
Votolato, "because I've
gotten more adept at
addressing what's wrong
and trying to make it better."
Extrapolating his band's hushed, winsome chamber-folk as an extension of the song
writer's personality, it's not hard to believe that Pond was once painfully introverted and
had a difficult time interfacing with the innately social activity that is touring.
"I guess I just really understand what it takes to do this and not spend too much
money and to keep myself slightly sane and to play with people," Pond says. "It's a frag
ile equation, and I think I've gotten it to work well enough so I can enjoy it. I used to
just sit in the dressing room and wait to play, and it kinda felt like torture. Repetition
somehow makes things easier."
Athens has been a regular stop for Matt Pond PA's years of touring; Pond himself
recalls a bashful pilgrimage to meet Ross Shapiro at Schoolkids Records. ("Double Thriller
is twice as good as Thriller, he says, "but I would say that The Glands is three times as
good as Thriller")
This tour is not Pond's first rodeo with Votolato, but their friendship has flowered
over the years. "One of my first tours was playing with him and another band," Pond
says. "And I didn't speak to him almost at all that tour; I was extremely, clinically shy.
But then they were talking about this tour last spring, and we just jumped on it, and
I've never played with anyone as straightforward—that kind of combination of both criti
cal and sweet and open, where there's no bullshit. And I love his music, too. I mean, I'm
not a hugger, and we hugged a lot." [Jeff Tobias]
