THE EQUINOX BRINGS THE FUNNY
Where Hitchcock Meets Hilarious: The
University of Georgia theater department
launches its new season with its production
of The 39 Steps, Sept. 22-24 and 27-30 at
8 p.m. (with a matinee show Oct. 2 at 2:30
p.m.) in the Cellar Theatre of the UGA Fine
Arts Building. Film buffs will recognize the
title from Alfred Hitchcock's classic 1935 film,
adapted from John Buchan's novel about an
innocent bystander caught in a web of mis
taken identity and espionage. This version,
written by Patrick Barlow and directed here by
George Contini, is ambitious, to say the least,
a shot-by-shot reenactment of the film fea
turing just four actors in a total of 39 roles.
University Theatre's press release describes the
play as "a fast-paced whodunit that blends a
Hitchcock masterpiece, a juicy spy novel and
a dash of Monty Python," so
this should give you some idea
of what to expect. However it
shakes out, it certainly promises
to be entertaining and a great
showcase for the director and
his actors.
Tickets to the play are $15
for general admission and $12
for students with a UGA ID.

Batter Up!: The Oconee Youth
Playhouse will hold individual
auditions for its upcoming per
formance of Damn Yankees!,
the classic musical about base
ball and the lengths some will
go to for the love of the game-
even at the cost of one man's
soul. Auditions will be held from
6:30 to 8 p.m. at Oconee Youth
School of Performance, 1050
Jamestown Blvd. in Watkinsville,
and are open to high-schoolers
and adults. Auditioners should sign up for a
time slot, prepare a Broadway-style song no
longer than one minute and bring sheet music

Bump and Grind: Effie's Club Follies will
present the second round of Burlesque Beta,
its monthly open-mic variety show, at Go Bar
on Friday, Sept. 23 at 10 p.m. Rather than
a full-on Effie^ show, this is an opportunity
for local performers to display their chops in
a non-conventional format. I attended last
month's showcase and it was a lot of fun, if
a little shaky its first time out, with several
singers, some belly-dancing, some trick hula-
hooping and a rendition of ''Single Ladies"
on the ukulele that brought the house down.
The irrepressible Miss Effie herself MCs the
proceedings. Admission is free, making it not
a bad way to spend a Friday night at all. For

Fresh Talent: Rose of Athens Theatre will
be conducting a new round of workshops for
young actors, ages 8-18, beginning Friday,
troupe takes aim at the Harry Potter franchise
in a dozen irreverent sketches—because,
you know, the poor kid hasn't been through
enough. The show starts at midnight and

"You Gotta See the Baby!": Lisa Mende, one
of the guiding lights of the Circle Ensemble
Theatre Company will be holding an eight-
week improvisational comedy workshop at
Floorspace Athens (in the Chase Park ware
houses) Deginning Oct. 1. Mende happens to
be a very accomplished actress with a ton of
film, television and theater work under her
belt; if you saw the "Seinfeld" episode with
"shrinkage," you may recognize Mende as the
mother of the hideous baby. This is, therefore,
a golden opportunity for aspiring actors to
learn some real craft and for veterans to get
an always-needed brush-up. Pre-registration

7 p.m. (sign-ups at 6:30). Performers of all
