Walker Last week provided a lot of nostalgia, sentiment and excite ment as we celebrated the 54th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Many of us listened to Dr. King’s recorded speeches, read again about the spectacular achievements he initiated during his short lifetime, and partici pated in the many programs commemorating Dr. King. The Economic Opportunity Authority Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration that began in 1972 honored baseball great Jackie Robinson. Sharon Robin son, Jackie’s daughter, spoke at the EOA program at Butler United Presbyterian Church on last Thursday evening, kicking off the King Day activities. John H. Finney, Executive Director of EOA and Board Chairperson Agatha A. Cooper are to be commended for the fine program. ********** The Emancipation Proclama tion Association began the King Day activities with the annual parade on Friday morning with hundreds of floats, cars, vans, marching contingents of military persons, groups of organizations marching on foot and bands, bands, bands. This year for the first time horses were seen in the parade. The man in our house and Melissa Milton, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Milton, rode two beautiful and spirited mounts. He says he’ll probably do it again next year. After the parade hundreds gathered at the Savannah Civic Center’s Johnny Mercer Theater for the fourth annual memorial observance honoring Dr. King. The Rev. Dr. Fred L. Shuttles- worth, one of the founders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, spoke at the me morial service. It was a beautiful day for a parade and all the cultural activities that followed the me morial service. We extend congratulations to the King Day planners, and the Reverends Bennie Mitchell, Ed ward Williams and Frank Butler. ********** The United States Postal Ser vice Special Achievement Award was given to Mr. Louis P. McLendon, mail processing ma chine operator, in recognition of notable work performance. This honor is one of distinction, awarded to only one recipient each year by the Postmaster. We extend congratulations to vete- an postman, Mr. McLendon. ********* Rev. and Mrs. L. Scott Stell, Jr., parade marshals of the 4th annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Parade were in for more excit- ment before the end of the day on Friday. Newly-appointed 8th District Chatham County Commissioner Stell was selected to fill the vacancy left by Rep. Roy Allen. Rev. Stell, who spent 12 years on the commission, before 1980, was the almost unanimous choice of the county commissioners. ********** A capacity crowd attended the Family Day Celebration at < St. Philip AME Church on Sunday, January 9th. Dr. Brenda Chap man Williams was the dynamic speaker, receiving a standing ovation for her presentation. The Joseph Burroughs Family were chosen as “The Family of the Year.” They were presented a plaque for having demonstrated The Joseph Burroughs Family Photo by Harry E. Walker exemplary service to the church. Mrs. Patricia Beorces, lent beauty to the service, singing “The Lord’s Prayer.” A beautiful candle lighting tribute was held in memory of the deceased members for 1982.
