The all-day tuition- based kindergarten program located at 5650 Skidaway Road, will give each child the opportunity to discover and learn through listening, observing, experimenting, and practicing. The program will introduce children to a wide range of practical knowledge and skills, pro viding experiences that pro mote social, emotional, phys ical and intellectual growth thereby giving students the success they need to meet the academic goals for first grade. The Kindergarten Express curriculum is crafted fied and approved curricu- lums. As a whole, the empha sis of the established curricu lum is creativity, critical thinking, and life-long learn ing. By having a specially crafted curriculum participat ing students will receive a balanced program consisting of Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Health, R E., Music, Art, and Computer Technology. Kindergarten Express - Promoting Academic Excellence in the 21st Century! SCCPSS’ Academic Affairs division is proud to announce that its 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grant application for the 2008-2009 school year has been awarded by The Georgia Department of Education (GDOE) in the amount of $1,533,584 to continue eight existing CCLC centers and to estab lish five new programs. The original 2004 grantees were awarded $1,183,584 in continuation funds for their fifth and final year to continue their pro gram at the following sites: Bartow, East Broad, Haven and Pt. Wentworth Elementary Schools, DeRenne, Hubert and Mercer Middle Schools and Beach High School. The money awarded from the new 2008 grant, $350,000, will establish 21st CCLC after-school programs for Pre-K students at East Broad, Haven and Thunderbolt Elementary as well as programs at Garrison Elementary (grades 3-5) and Savannah High (grades 9-12). The grant applications were made in partnership with the YMCA of Coastal Georgia and the Chatham Savannah Youth Futures Authority (YFA). The goal of the grant is to improve schools by providing aca demic enrichment activities that will support student learning during non-school hours and provide family lit eracy and educational devel opment activities. F. Ilugbo was a Johnson High School 2001 honor graduate and bridged out of the Savannah State University Upward Bound Program in 2001. She attend ed Georgia State University where she was a honor stu dent until her demise in November 2003. In her mem ory, a scholarship was estab lished at Savannah State University by her parents, Margaret (Theodore) Ilugbo- Hunter, Clement K. Ilugbo, and Niere R. Brown, a special friend of Melissa’s. This scholarship will be for stu dents who bridge out of the Upward Bound Program and enroll at Savannah State University their freshmen year. They will receive a total of $300 for books during the academic year. Thirteen SSU Upward Bound Bridge graduates will be the first to receive the Melissa I. F. Ilugbo Memorial Scholarship during the 2008- 2009 academic year, namely: Karl Arilla (Johnson), Jasmine Carpenter (Windsor), Leslie Coney (Beach), Me’Kia Davis (Jenkins), Ke’Aira Davis (Windsor), Jadon Forbes (Beach), Janay Howell (Beach), Karlecia Jackson (Beach), Issac Jones (Beach), Danielle Miller (Groves), Jasmine Pendergraph (Jenkins), Courtney Pinkney (Windsor), and Albert Wright (Johnson). In 2009, a fundraiser for this Memorial Scholarship will be planned and the pro ceeds will go in support of the Upward Bound students at Savannah State University.
