Hazel Trice Edney NNPA Editor-in-Chief DENVER (NNPA) - U. S. Sen. Barack Obama has officially accepted the Democratic nomina tion for president of the United States before an audience of at least 75,000 adoring supporters, who also cheered the possibility of his becoming America’s first Black president. The euphoric moment was played out before millions who watched by TV and the internet around the world. It transcended politics as it shattered doubts that Americans of all races and back grounds can unite behind an African-American candidate for president. Moreover, it raised hopes that people of color can soar above intrinsic White supremacy in a nation that for centuries embraced slavery, Jim Crow and modern-day institu tional racism. “With profound gratitude and great humility, I accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States,” Obama told the crowd of flag-waving, cheer ing, chanting, applauding, stump ing and crying supporters at Invesco Field at Mile High in Denver. He immediately recalled his 2004 speech to the Democratic Convention as a then candidate for the U. S. Senate. “Four years ago, I stood before you and told you my story - of the brief union between a young man from Kenya and a young woman from Kansas - who weren’t well-off or well-known, but shared a belief that in America, their son could achieve whatever he put his mind to,” he said. “It is that promise that has always set this country apart - that through hard work and sac rifice, each of us can pursue our individual dreams, but still come together as one American fami ly, to ensure that the next gener ation can pursue their dreams as well.” He continued, “That’s why I stand here tonight. John McCain has chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential candidate. The presumptive Republican nominee held a rally in Dayton, Ohio, of about 15,000 supporters, who wel comed the surprise pick of the rela tively unknown politician with cheers and flags. However, many long-time political observers have questioned Palin’s experience. Additionally, they have asked if the McCain thoroughly investigated her background. "I was just your average hockey mom in Alaska" before getting involved in politics, she said. Palin, 44, described herself as a fighter against corruption and a bipar tisan reformer in her first appearance as a candidate for vice president, an office she said she never expected to seek. Palin is a first-term governor who unseated incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski in the Republican primary in 2006 and went on to defeat former Gov. Tony Knowles, a Democrat, in the general election. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin Palin will be the first woman to be nominated for vice president as a Republican and only the second to run for vice president on a major party ticket, after Democrat Geraldine Ferraro in 1984. Palin is set to speak to the Republican convention on Wednesday, September 3. arver ew branch and a proud tradition of service 7110 Skidawa\ Road - Savannah, Georgia 31406 j — iVl 1 - __ C O J
