The famous singer Oumou Sangare, for instance, started her profes sional career with this orchestra, and so did Toumany Diabate, the prince of Kora. The Song and Dance Ensemble of West Africa has offered astounding perform ances to its audience: Varied percussion instruments, from the djembe to doundouns and other balaphons, excellent dancers whose muscles seem to be capable of any move ment at any speed, and a very elaborate visual ensemble with colorful, inventive cos tumes. It is a modem ballet as if from another world, with graceful movements and a virtuosity, which have con veyed irresistible drive and force to the public. Between tradition and modernity, its repertory is rich and varied. The traditional rhythms, songs and dances are always represented in the troupe's various creations, as well as the Mandingo tradition. "Fantastic! The simulation is open to the public and will take place from 9 a.m. - 12 noon at Savannah’s Civic Center. The simulations, developed by Rowel (Reform Organization of Welfare) Education Association, require groups of 35 to 75 people to assume the roles of families living in poverty. The goal of each family is to survive for one month, which takes place in four 15- minute “weeks.” In this time, participants must maintain secure shelter, util ities, feed their families, make loan payments, meet living expenses such as transportation, handle unex pected emergencies, access local support services, and keep their children in school - all while subsisting at or below the poverty level. Thousands of families in Chatham County are liv ing at or below the poverty level. For them, every day can turn into an emergency, whether it is securing a place to live, feeding their fami lies, paying utility bills or finding and accessing trans portation and support servic es to help them meet basic needs. The simulation is open to anyone who wants to learn more about what it’s like to live in poverty in our community. Participation is free but registration is required.
