James Wright Special to the NNPA from the Afro-American Newspapers WASHINGTON (NNPA) - Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, one of America's most distin guished Republicans, has decided to support Sen. Barack Obama as the next president of the United States. He announced his bomb-shell of a decision on the Sunday edition of NBC's "Meet the Press." Powell said of Obama, "He has both style and sub stance. I think he is a trans formational figure." Powell, a former chair man of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under George W. Bush and Bill Clinton and national security advisor under Ronald Reagan, said that Obama displayed "steadi ness, the intellectual curiosi ty and he selected a vice president who is ready to be president on Day One." Powell still identified himself as a Republican and said he will remain one. But he said he has become con cerned about the tone of the campaign of Sen. John McCain, whom he has known for 25 years. "It seemed to me that his (McCain) campaign's focus has become more nar row and narrower," he told “Meet the Press” moderator Tom Brokaw. "I see Obama as being more inclusive. It bothers me that the central part of John's campaign has become Bill Ayers (the for mer 60s radical). "These robo calls that people are getting, saying that Obama is connected to Ayers, which is saying that Obama supports terrorists. It goes too far." Powell also said he did not approve of McCain's selec tion of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate, saying that she is not ready to be president. He also frowned on McCain's actions during the early part of the financial cri sis. Powell said that the next president would likely make two selections to the U.S. Supreme Court and he would not want McCain making that decision because the choices would be conservatives. Powell also bemoaned members of his party who tell people that Obama is a Muslim, "and they know it is not true." "It would seem that there are some people in the party that think that there is something wrong with being See Endorsement, page 17 Savannah Area Business Political Action Committee Endorses Candidates After interviewing candidates for each of the contested local races in the November 4, 2008 General Elections, the Board of Directors of the Savannah Area Business Political Action Committee (SABPAC) decid ed to endorse and make financial contributions to the following candi dates: Chairman of the Chatham County Commission, Pete Liakakis; Sheriff, Al St. Lawrence; District Attorney, David Lock; County Commission District 1, Helen Stone; County Commission District 4, Pat Ferrell; and County Commission District 6, David Gellatly. The Georgia Historical Society in partnership with Sam's Club and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. recently dedicated two new historical markers in Savannah. Markers for the Beach Institute and St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church were dedicated on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at their respective locations. The installation of these historical markers brings to a close an initiative, funded by Wal-Mart, to recognize sites and events significant to the African- American experience in the Savannah area. "Wal-Mart is honored to have sponsored these markers recognizing the important con tributions of African-American individuals and institutions to the Savannah region's rich cul tural diversity and proud her itage," says Glen Wilkins, Senior Manager, Public Affairs, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. "It has been our privilege to work with the Georgia Historical Society to open new pages in Georgia's history to the people who live here and those who visit." As part of this initiative, the Georgia Historical Society's community advisory committee identified four sub jects that reflect the larger con tributions of local institutions and individuals who influ enced not only the history of Savannah, but of Georgia and the nation as well. The two pre vious historical markers identi fy the contributions of local physicians Cornelius and Alice Woodby McKane, and of General David Hunter's General Orders No.7, a precur sor to Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.
