Obama Introduces His National Security Team

O n Monday, December 1, 2008,
President-elect Barack Obama offi
cially introduced the members of his
national security team, including former
Democratic primary rival Hillary Clinton as
his secretary of state and Robert Gates, who
will be remain as defense secretary.
Obama also announced that retired
Marine Gen. James L. Jones, a former top
commander of NATO and U.S. forces in
Europe, would be his national security
adviser. At a news conference in Chicago,
Obama said his team is uniquely suited to
pursue a new strategy that skillfully uses,
balances, and integrates all elements of
American power. He said they share his
pragmatism about the use of power, and his
sense of purpose about America's role as a
leader in the world.
Obama named Washington lawyer Eric
Holder as attorney general and Arizona Gov.
Janet Naploitano as homeland security chief.
He also named two senior foreign policy
positions outside the Cabinet, including
campaign foreign policy adviser Susan Rice
as U.N. ambassador.
Speaking of Senator Clinton, Obama
said she possesses an extraordinary intelli
gence and toughness, and a remarkable work
ethic. He said, “She is an American of
tremendous stature who will have my com
plete confidence, who knows many of the
world's leaders, who will command respect
in every capital, and who will clearly have
the ability to advance our interests around
the world."
Clinton will give up her seat as a sena
tor from New York to join the Obama
Cabinet.
Millions of people are expected to go to
Washington to celebrate President-elect
Barack Obama's inauguration on January 20,
2009.

(SSU) will hold
its 173rd com
mencement cer
emony on
Saturday,
December 13, at
10 a.m., in Tiger
Arena.
Approximately
160 students will
receive under
graduate and
graduate
degrees. Otis S.
Johnson, mayor of the city of Savannah, will
deliver the commencement address.
As the 64th mayor of the city of
Savannah, Johnson is currently serving his
second term as the second African-American
mayor in Savannah’s history. Nationally
known in the field of community building and
youth development, he has served in active
leadership roles for numerous social-service
organizations, such as the Chatham-Savannah
Youth Futures Authority; the National League
of Cities Council on Youth, Education, and
Families; and the Mary Reynolds Babcock
Foundation. He also has served as an elected
official on the Savannah City Council, and as
a board member for the Savannah Chatham-
County Board of Public Education and the
Georgia Municipal Association.
Previously, Johnson was on the faculty of
Savannah State for 26 years, retiring as dean
of the College of Liberal Arts and Social
Sciences in 2002. During his tenure, he estab
lished an undergraduate program in social
work, accredited by the Council on Social
Work Education in 1984.
A graduate of Armstrong-Atlantic State
University and the University of Georgia,
Johnson later earned his master’s degree in
social work from Clark Atlanta University and
his doctorate in social welfare from the Heller
School at Brandeis University.
Nwosu Recognized for Nigerian Medical Missions
ATLANTA - Savannah-based
cardiologist Eugene A. Nwosu,
M.D., received the Jack A.
Raines Humanitarian Award for
2008 at the Medical Association
of Georgia's 154th House of
Delegates meeting on Saturday,
October 4 for his "outstanding
humanitarian contribution to his
fellow man and community
beyond the normal practice of
medicine."
Dr. Nwosu has been host
ing free medical clinics in his
Nigerian homeland since 1990,
providing the sick and needy
with treatment, free consultation
and medication. He was joined
by Martin Nwankwo, M.D., in
an expanded medical mission to
the African country in July
2001. While there, they treated
more than 2,500 patients over a
five-day period.
At the end of 2001, Dr.
Nwosu and his wife, Mary, and
others established the Goodness
and Mercy Foundation to offer
humanitarian medical services
and health and nutrition educa
tion to Africa's needy. The foun
dation recruits physicians, sur
geons, dentists, optometrists,
ophthalmologists, nurses, and
nutritionists to go on the mis
sions. It currently supports a
small medical clinic in Ajalli,
Nigeria, where more than 3,000

patients received health and pre
ventative education during a
one-week period in September
2007. The foundation plans on
expanding into Ghana in the
near future. For the past seven
years, Dr. Nwosu has organized
the "Hands Across Africa Gala"
in Savannah, which is the foun
dation's primary fundraiser. The
foundation has been featured in
three television documentaries.
Dr. Nwosu was nominated
for the award by the Georgia
Medical Society.
Dr. Nwosu completed
medical school at the University
of Ibadan Medical School in
Nigeria in 1981. He completed
his residency at Cook County
Hospital in Chicago.

en, and Desserts.
“Savannah's 100 Celebrity
Men Who Cook” is a benefit event
for the United Negro College Fund.
Started in 2000, this mega tasting
party showcases the culinary skills
of a diverse group of dedicated men
in our community. Representatives
from the political, religious, corpo
rate, medical, academic, volunteer
communities and all walks of life
come together annually to support
higher education for our children.
This is the event of the season
that you don't want to miss. Come

ies, and eat all you want! All pro
ceeds from this great event will
benefit the United Negro College
Fund.

anthropic organization that
fundraises college tuition money
for black students and general
scholarship funds for 39 private
historically black colleges and uni
versities. The UNCF was incorpo
rated on April 25, 1944 by
Frederick D. Patterson (then presi
dent of what is now Tuskegee
University), Mary McLeod
Bethune, and others. UNCF helps
to close the educational attainment
gap between African Americans
and the majority population, and
helps promising students attend
college
