Tigers Ink 13
Football Recruits
Savannah State signed 13
players to grant-in-aids to
play football for the Tigers on
February 3. Of the 13, three
are from the coastal empire.
Running back Sheldon
Barnes and linebacker
Darvean Herron played at
Bradwell in Hinesville, GA
while wide receiver Josh
Coleman of Brunswick High
in Brunswick, GA. SSU
signed signed four wide
receivers, three athletes, two
linebackers, one quarterback,
one running back, one offen
sive lineman and one tight
end.
SSU Women Fall
To 9-19
The Savannah State women's
basketball team fell to 9-19
on the season with losses to
Virginia Tech and Longwood
last week. SSU led Virginia
Tech 23-21 at halftime of
February 11 but lost the game
41-68. Mattisha Mangum led
SSU with 10 points.
Longwood defeated the Lady
Walter Moore
Tigers 79-48 on Feb 13.
Mangum tossed in 14 points
to lead SSU.
Savannah State
Starts Softball
Season
Savannah State started their
2010 softball season last
week. The Lady Tigers start
ed the season with a double-
header loss at Alabama State
on February 11 by scores of
9-3 and 8-0. SSU hosted the
SSU Softball Classic on Feb.
13 & 14. The Lady Tigers
defeated Fort Valley State 5-4
on Feb. 13 and defeated
Edward Waters 9-0 and Clark
Atlanta 12-2 on Feb. 14. SSU
lost to Fort Valley State 11-10
in nine innings to close the
tournament.
Wallace, Gaines
Join Hall of Fame
Former Savannah State ath
letes Michael Wallace and
James Gaines were inducted
into the Effingham County
High School Athletics Hall of
Fame on February 6. Wallace
graduated from ECHS in
1986 and was the team MVP
his senior year. Wallace
played defensive back at
Savannah State where he was
a four-year starter. He also
served as a SSU coach in
football and track. Gaines
graduated from ECHS in
1973 and played basketball at
SSU for two years. While at
ECHS, Gaines tied a school
record with 18 rebounds per
game, while averaging 10
assists and scoring 26.4
points per game as a point
guard. His senior season,
Gaines led the Rebels to a
region championship.

The Atlanta-based S.O.S.
Band formed in the late ‘70s
as Santa Monica. The Sounds
of Success Band exploded on
the music scene in 1980 with
a name change, recording
contract and its first mega-hit
platinum single, “Take Your
Time,” which climbed to the
number one position on mul
tiple music charts. Fans
embraced the group’s first
album, titled The S.O.S.
Band, which went on to
become a gold album. The
S.O.S. Band collaborated
with Jimmy Jam and Terry
Lewis, who produced the
group’s next three gold
albums that yielded mega sin
gles like “Just Be Good to
Me,” “Tell Me if You Still
Care,” “Weekend Girl,” “The
Finest,” “Sands of Time,” and
more.
After working in the
music industry for nearly a
decade, K’Jon’s epic first sin
gle “On the Ocean” catapult
ed him into the R&B spot
light in 2009. K’Jon’s story
behind the success of his
smash hit: “I was sitting in a
hotel room in Los Angeles
wondering if writing songs
was worth being away from
my daughter. I was really
going through it and wonder
ing if my ship would ever
come in, and the metaphor
became the inspiration.”
K’Jon’s sudden success
took years of hard work by
the Detroit-born singer and
songwriter. His song
“Miami” was featured on the
soundtrack of the movie
2Fast2Furious in 2004, and
thanks to the exposure, he
landed opening-act gigs for

recently recognized some of

nation, becoming four of the
46 male players nominated
for the honor in Georgia. A

American Basketball Team
Boys Selection Committee, a
group of 32 prominent bas
ketball experts, including
nationally-renowned coaches
acts like Ne-Yo and Raheem
DeVaughn. In 2009, he
signed with Universal
Republic Records and pre
pared his major label debut
album I Get Around, which
landed in the number one
spot on Billboard's Hot
R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart
last August.

annual Boys Game will tip
off at 8:00 p.m. ET,
Wednesday, March 31, at

Columbus, Ohio, and will air
live on ESPN. The Girls
Game will precede the Boys
Game at 5:30 p.m. ET and
will broadcast live on
ESPNU.
