The Savannah Tribune • Wednesday, February 17, 2010 - 9 Savannah Area Tourism Leadership Council Holds Annual Dinner Stratton and Mary Leopold Received the Herb and Franklin R Traub Visionary Award The Savannah Area Tourism Leadership Council presented several major awards and three scholar ships at the 12th Annual Tourism Awards & Scholarship Dinner presented by Georgia Power, which was held at the Hilton Savannah DeSoto on February 11, 2010. Steve Green of Stephen Green Properties, Inc. received the John P. Rousakis Community Champion Award. The award, which is named in memory of former Savannah mayor John Rousakis, is given to an individual respon sible for supporting tourism and promoting Savannah. Stratton and Mary Leopold received the Herb and Franklin Traub Visionary Award as a team. This award is given to someone who con sistently works to promote tourism growth, recognizes and nurtures the potential of new projects for Savannah and creates awareness for the city. The award is named in memory of Herb Traub, the former and late owner of The Pirates' House, and his late wife, Franklin, both of whom were actively involved in the hospitality industry for many years. Jody McIntyre of the Savannah Marriott Riverfront earned the TLC Member of the Year Award, which is pre sented to a member who has demonstrated consistent ded ication to the organization. Kathy Massey of Savor Savannah Catering by SMG (exclusive caterer for the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center), received the Service Leader Award. The TLC Service Star Award was presented to Maybelle Monroe of the Hyatt Regency Savannah. Both service awards recog nize exemplary job perform ance in the hospitality indus try. Each year, the TLC is proud to present scholarships to students pursuing hospital ity careers. To date, the TLC has given in excess of $44,000 in scholarships to area students. This year, three $1,000 scholarships were presented at the event. They were given to Meredith Brewer of the University of South Carolina - Beaufort, Benita Mclver Milligan of Savannah Technical College and Stephanie Thompson of Georgia Southern University. “Developing the workforce for our industry needs to start at a young age. Grand Festival Day is Entertainment Highlight of Annual Savannah Black Heritage Festival The SOS Band The 21 st Annual Savannah Black Heritage Festival, presented by Savannah State University and the City of Savannah, includes Grand Festival Day on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Savannah Civic Center. Considered the highlight of the heritage celebration, Grand Festival Day is packed with family-oriented activi ties that include a health fair, youth talent showcase, work shops, vending and more. The day begins with an interactive health experience presented by the American Diabetes Association, Aetna and St. Joseph’s/Candler African American Health Information and Resource Center. Registration for free workshops, exercise demon strations and health screen ings will begin at 9 a.m. Attendees will learn more about prevention, detection and management of diabetes, as well as maintaining a healthy lifestyle through nutrition and exercise. Before the 3 p.m. ribbon-cut- ting ceremony that marks the official beginning of Grand Festival Day, children and adults may reserve a seat for the African-American Living and Learning Village, 1:30-3 p.m. There, artisans will con duct hands-on workshops in making jewelry, drums, bas kets and more; painting and culinary arts for youth. Between 3 and 6 p.m., audi ences will enjoy Magic Marc, a puppet show by RJ and the Upbeats, the Savannah Children’s Choir and a Youth Talent Extravaganza spon sored by Savannah Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Savannah’s own Stephanie Edwards will open the evening entertainment segment for national record ing artists K’Jon and the S.O.S.
