Goodness & Mercy Foundation, Inc. will sponsor its annual “Hands Across Africa” Gala - Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront Ballroom. A Silent Auction will begin at 6:00P.M., and the program and dinner will begin at 7:00P.M. Goodness and Mercy Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit human service foundation that provides much needed medical care, medical supplies, and health education to low income families and others at risk in underserved areas in Africa. Every year, Dr. Eugene Nwosu, a local cardiologist and founder of Goodness & Mercy, takes a group of volunteer doc tors, dentists, nurses, and others from the Savannah area and around the country on medical missions to undeveloped villages in Nigeria and Ghana. With your help, the Goodness and Mercy volunteers can continue to provide medical care to people who are otherwise forced to go without. Donation for the Gala is only $75.00. Morrison, Jackson and Oxnard Honored at Buttimer Awards Dinner Tom Oxnard The Chatham County Democratic Committee held its 2010 Annual Buttimer Awards Dinner on March 4 th at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center. Lester G. Jackson The CCDC honored Howard J. Morrison, busi nessman and philanthropist, as the Toby Buttimer Award Recipient for exceptional dedication to service and activism within both the Howard J. Morrison Democratic Party and the community. All five Democratic gubernatorial candidates were in attendance to give a short speech at the dinner. Several other local and state officials and candidates, including candidates for the contested 12 th Congressional District Congressman John Barrow and former State Senator Regina Thomas attended. The Committee also honored Georgia State Senator Dr. Lester G. Jackson III with the Arthur Gignilliat Public Service Award and Tom Oxnard, founder of the Skidaway Island Democrats, with the Joan and Tony Mathews Yellow Dog Democrat Award. In its 27th year, the awards dinner is named for the late Toby Buttimer, who was a longtime local Democratic activist. On Wednesday, February 24, Greenbriar Children’s Center held its Annual Board of Directors Meeting and Awards Luncheon at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. Dr. Clemontine Washington, 2009 Board President presided over the meeting. The luncheon also cel ebrated the 60th Anniversary of Greenbriar, and also recognized emeri tus board members Arnold Jackson, and Virginia Parham. Executive Director Gena Taylor presented the awards. Recipients included: 2009 Volunteer of the Year Individual: Christina Temple, Group: Jonesville Baptist Church of the P.A.W.; 2009 Donor of the Year: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; 2009 Media Partner of the Year: The Savannah Tribune; 2009 Community Partner of the Year: The Savannah Harbor Foundation. Greenbriar’s theme for 2010 is “Building Bridges of Hope and Love”. Mutombo is a Profile Partner with the U.S. Census Dikembe Mutombo Dikembe Mutombo, former NBA player and activist, has been chosen by the U.S. Census as a National Profile Partner. In his role, he will work with the Census and create out reach strategies to increase over all participation in the Census among African and African- American communities and also utilize the Census information for outreach projects to improve the quality of life for the people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Dikembe Mutombo Foundation is dedicated to equal ity and empowerment for all peo ple, with a focus on those in the Congo. Mutombo’s role as a National Profile Partner will be twofold: to speak to African audi ences and communicate the importance of the Census and being counted; and to demon strate the connection between the Census and support for other communities, including the Congo and other African coun tries.
