Selected programs will be presented that pay tribute to the late Westley W. Law, historian, preservationist. Civil Rights leader, and founder of the Savannah Black Heritage Festival. The festival is presented by The City of Savannah and Savannah State University, and all events and activities are free | of admission and open to the public. Each year, the festival presents activities for every age and interest. Cultural education and exposure to the perform ing and visual arts, as well as ethnic cuisine, crafts, fun and family are emphasized throughout the celebration. Great music of every genre, dance performances, national and re gional recording artists, local youth talent showcases, historic tours, visual art exhibitions by internationally acclaimed and local artists and sculptors, the W.W. Law Lecture Series, spo ken word and dramatic productions are all included on the schedule. In addition, educational opportu nities are provided through a Health and Well ness Fair, culinary arts activities and youth programs. The Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Company of Denver, CO, will be the fea tured dance group for this year’s festival. As a part of the “Legacy” theme series, jazz singer and pianist Freddy Cole will be pre sented in concert on Wednesday, February 20th as a precursor to the Saturday eve ning performance of “Unforgettable Nat King Cole - The Man and His Music.” The Nat King Cole piece will be the 3rd production presented at the festival from the National Portrait Gallery’s Cultures in Motion Series. Law was the founder of the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation and leaves as part of his legacy The King-Tisdell Cottage and the Beach Institute African Cultural Center. Richmond Hill Welcomes First Black Christmas Parade Grand Marshall Congratulations to Don ald Singleton of Richmond Hill, Georgia. He has been selected to serve as Grand Marshall of the 2012 Rich mond Hill Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 1. He is the first African American to have this honor. Singleton was bom and raised in Richmond Hill, at tended the original George Washington Carver School from elementary through high school. He is a mem ber of Mount Sinai Mis sionary Baptist Church in Richmond Hill. He has been involved in many Vet eran’s Day and Memorial Day observances through out the nation. He assisted in bringing the Moving Wall Memorial to Rich mond Hill in 2008 also in Savannah. He served in the US Army from 1966-1969, serving 19 months and 23 days in Vietnam with 101st Airborne Divi sion Vietnam, served in the Air National Guard 1970- 1974, served in the Coast Guard Reserve 1974-1978. He is a member of several lo cal organiza tions including: American Le gion Post 27; DAV (Disabled American Vet erans); Vietnam Veterans of America Chap ter 671;101st Air borne Association; 82nd Air borne Association; Screaming Eagles in Vietnam Associa tion; and the Purple Heart As sociation. He is married to Letha Sin gleton for 44 years and they have 4 daughters and 4 grand- Donald Singleton children. He is a retired lo comotive engineer of CSX Railroad; distributes The Savannah Tribune in Bryan and Liberty counties and he loves farming as a hobby. Otis Johnson Portrait Unveiled Otis John son, the city’s 64th mayor has been re cently honored with the unveiling of his official portrait. The portrait is displayed in the Hall of Mayors in Savannah’s city hall. It is something that Johnson says he has been waiting for since he took office in 2004. Johnson has been working on his biography since leaving office. John son was very excited to see his painting. He acknowledged, “It is quite an honor and only L-R Mayor Johnsons’ mother Ms. Lillian Spencer, sister Dr. Marjorie Campbell, Mayor Johnson, Shevon Carr, and sister Janice Glover. a few will have that honor. I ap preciate it very much. I think the painting is fantastic. It is amazing what you can do with airbrushing.” The mayor was honored by council for his service as an alderman and as mayor.
