Gaskin. The ceremony was held last Friday, September 20, 2013 at the United State Marine Barracks in Washington D. C. Many attendees were from Savannah and Savannah State University. It was a beautiful evening with a full moon shining as the ceremony included the Marine Band performing so beautiful the National An them and a medley of Mo town songs. General James F. Amos, 35th Commandant of the Marine Corps, gave re- Lieutenant General Walter E. Gaskin Retires marks during the ceremony congratulating Lt. General Gaskin on a job well done. He thanked him for his ser vice and his friendship. During the cere mony, Lt. General Gaskin received several awards as well as his Order of Retire ment. After the awards pre sentation, Lt. General Gaskin gave remarks naming lour influences that make up his entire being. Those lour in fluences are God’s Grace, the love of family, the institution of Savannah State College (now University) and the Marine Corps. Following Lt. Gen eral Gaskin’s remarks, Dora Gaskin, Lt. General Gaskin’s wife, received flowers and (L-R) 35th Commandant General James. F Amos with Lt. General Walter G. Gaskin accolades. After his official announcement of retirement, Lt. General Gaskin and his wife Dora walked away from the ceremony to the tune of Ray Charles’ “Georgia”. A reception was held immedi ately following the ceremony Gaskin began his military career after his 1974 graduation from Savannah State University’s NROTC Scholarship Program with a Bachelor of Science degree. Gaskin also earned a Masters degree in Public Administra tion from the University of Oklahoma in 1992. He has also completed the Senior Executive Seminar from the JFK School of Government, Harvard University in 2002. Continued on Page 8 Eddie Griffin To Perform At Johnny Mercer Theatre SSP Barber and Beauty presents Eddie Grif fin and Friends on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at the John ny Mercer Theatre. Also ap pearing will be comedians Cocoa Brown, Redbone and Bruh Man. The host of the show will be Doug Banks. Eddie Griffin, is a popular comedian turned ac tor who started his career on stage as a dare, has built an ever-growing fan base since jumping onto the comedy scene in 1990. Bom in Kansas City, Missouri, Eddie was voted class clown three years in a row in high school. His first love was always dance, and by the young age of 16 he opened his own dance stu dio and was choreographing the Kansas City Chiefs half time shows. But all of that would soon change when one night his cousin dared him to go on stage at the local comedy club Sanford and Sons where he was told to do 3 minutes. He per formed off-the-cuff for 45 minutes successfully. It was then that Griffin purchased a one-way ticket to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming a stand up. In only one short month, he was a regular at the renowned Comedy Store, where he was compared with esteemed talents such as Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, and Lenny Brace. Mrs. Betty El lington, Savannah Branch NAACP Education Chair man expressed concerns as sociated with African Amer ican students not making the grade and being left behind in the school system. Dr. Thomas Lock amy, Jr. Superintendent of the Savannah-Chatham County School Board delivered the State of the Education Ad dress after the introduction of his administrative staff and board members. He also introduced and welcomed back Ann Levett as the new Chief Academic Officer. During his address, Lock amy acknowledged that the Savannah is in the top ten school district in technol ogy. He noted that Wood- ville-Tompkins Career and Technical High School now include grades 9-11 and is in the top four schools in the district. Young ladies between the ages of 9-12 gathered to learn more on how to network; what girls should know about boys; self esteem; body image; and social issues. Mrs. Merry Perry, Nurse Practitioner at Curtis Cooper Health Center, Ms. Jackie Redden, Monroe Langston Inc. computer technology and Mr. Joel “Jo Jo” Jones were guest speakers.
