A WON KOlCAAE tjOVfcKNMfcNT AGENCY EROOKER MEDICARE MAKEDEHGHT BROOKERMEOICARE.COM ® (912)-596-5685 Letter to the Editor L-R: Joseph Erwin, Richard Shinhoster, Janice Roots, Dr. Anne Bailey, Activist Patt Gunn, Pastor Larry Gordon, Former Mayor Otis Johnson, & Thurmond Tillman I am looking forward with anticipation for a Sham rock shake as we prepare to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. March is a month of celebra tion and commemoration that I feel we must look back at the events that have recently transpired but should not be overshadowed or overlooked before we move forward. My name is Pastor Larry Gordon, I have been the Superintendent at Solo mon Temple COGIC for the last 36th years here in Savan nah and am the President of the Weeping Time Coalition a group that was formed of concerned citizens in effort to preserve the site of the historic Weeping Time Slave Auction of 1859, which is the largest recorded sale of human beings in United States history which took place right here in Savan nah. I would like to share my excitement about the events that transpired this February 27 - March 3, 2024 as we hosted the “From a Weeping Time to a Wonderful Time Convention”. In doing so I reflect on my youth as a young man in Savannah in the early 70’s when I saw teams of people running down Broughton street to try to catch a glimpse of the character with his hands held high and his fingers proudly displaying two “V” shapes for victory. The then President Richard Nixon drew hundreds if not thousands of onlookers. His victory was short lived, but ours in West Savan nah is not. Ours has taken many years to culminate into a move ment of recognition that is taking place in West Savannah now. This year we were proud ly joined by many esteemed speakers and guests, including former Mayor Otis Johnson, Pastor Joyce Hall, Sistah Patt Gunn, and Dr. Anne C. Bailey author of The Weeping Time: Memory and the Largest Slave Auction in American Histo ry, historian, and professor of SUNY Binghamton. Dr. Bailey wanted to share her experience here in West Savannah, in a church with faith based leaders. She shared her understanding of why this event is significant in our lives here today. She shared some of her insight about her understanding of the impor tance that those who were sold that day named their experi ence and called it “The Weep ing Time”. That the act of nam ing their experience was one of agency and self determination that can not be overlooked. So, I want to let our great city know that we are not only a magnet for the celebra tions of the Irish in the month of March, but we are also the home of great healing, reflec tion and protection of humanity for people from Savannah and around the world.
