James drove home the point that the impact of Voter Apathy and Voter Disengage ment is that it may lead to Au tocratic Rule and/or a Dictator ship. “We want to encourage voters to ask themselves and those they are concerned about: Do You Cherish Your Individ ual Freedoms, or Do You Want Them Taken Away? It may be closer than you think!” Coming up to the Tuesday, May 21, 2024 pri maries for important coun ty-wide elections in Chatham County, the HCFS’s Signature Roundtable and Open Forum also featured candidates on the ballot. Georgia Historical Society Dedicates New Historical Marker Recognizing Complex Story of American Slavery & Freedom Continued from Page 1 “The transition of the Montmollin Building’s use from slave mart to free school in 1865 captures a pivotal mo ment in history as newly freed African Americans worked to secure their rights and free doms by forging a path forward through education,’’ said Fuci- ana Spracher, City of Savannah Municipal Archives Director. “The installation of a histori cal marker sharing the history of the building and the Bryan School is long overdue, and we look forward to utilizing the marker to share this important story with all our residents and visitors.’’ The marker dedica tion took place in Savannah’s City Market, near the Mont mollin Building, at 23 Barnard Street. The marker text reads: The Montmollin Building and Bryan School Banker and slave trader John S. Montmollin commissioned this building (c.1856) for his business. Af ter Montmollin's death, Alex ander Bryan continued using the building to hold and sell enslaved people. When US General William T. Sherman captured Savannah in Decem ber 1864, the US government, implementing emancipation, confiscated the building and provided it to Savannah’s Af rican-American community, which formed the Savannah Educational Association (SEA) to fund and establish schools. This building became the site of Bryan School. On January 10, 1865, at the school’s open ing, hundreds of Black chil dren marched here from First African Baptist Church. SEA schoolchildren publicly show cased their knowledge of gram mar, history, geography, arith metic, and other subjects in July 1865.
