Putting forth a con
cept for a formalized Citi
zenship Education School or
Program that would focus on
educating citizens on how the
levels of government work,
and the citizens’ roles and du
ties necessary for it to function
the way that the founders, and
subsequent crafters, had in
mind. James drove home the
point that the impact of Voter
Apathy and Voter Disengage
ment is that it may lead to Au
tocratic Rule and/or a Dictator
ship. “We want to encourage
voters to ask themselves and
those they are concerned about:
Do You Cherish Your Individ
ual Freedoms, or Do You Want
Them Taken Away? It may be
closer than you think!”
Coming up to the
Tuesday, May 21, 2024 pri

the ballot. All candidates who
qualified were invited to in
troduce themselves and their
platforms. Those who attended
were Sheriff John T. Wilcher;
Judges Tom Bordeaux, Mary
Katherine Moss, VaNessa Bai
ley, Trade Macke, and Katie
Brewington; Frank Penning
ton, Esq., Kimberly Gadsden;

and Bobby F. Fockett; Faureen
Monica Boles, Pastor Marsha
Buford, Tanet Tarharka Myers,
Dr. Dionne Hoskins Brown,
and Connie Hall by John Hall.
Diana Harvey John
son, Founder and Fead Con
sultant to the HCFS, says that
the HCFS Board of Directors
hopes that this will signal to
the community that it is time
to focus on the May 21st elec
tion as well as those coming up
through the General Election
in November. Informed and
participatory citizenship are a
must at this crucial time. Each
of the candidates on every bal
lot should be given the courte
sy of a listen-to and a platform
examination. Roy F. Jackson,
3rd Vice President and Politi
cal Action (PAC) Chairman of
the Savannah Branch, NAACP,
joined Johnson, as co-moder
ator of the Open Forum. The
format provided people of the
community an opportunity to
to hear the candidates, share
their visions, and generate dia
logue for the cause of commu
nity progress. The HCFS will
continue to provide informa

among those living and work

Georgia Historical Society Dedicates New
Historical Marker
Recognizing Complex Story of American Slavery & Freedom
Continued from Page 1
“The transition of
the Montmollin Building’s use
from slave mart to free school
in 1865 captures a pivotal mo
ment in history as newly freed
African Americans worked to
secure their rights and free
doms by forging a path forward
through education,’’ said Fuci-
ana Spracher, City of Savannah
Municipal Archives Director.
“The installation of a histori
cal marker sharing the history
of the building and the Bryan
School is long overdue, and we
look forward to utilizing the
marker to share this important
story with all our residents and
visitors.’’
The marker dedica
tion took place in Savannah’s
City Market, near the Mont
mollin Building, at 23 Barnard
Street. Speakers included Ken
Slats, Office of Communica
tions, City of Savannah; Rev
erend Thurmond Neill Tillman,
First African Baptist Church;
Fillian Grant-Baptiste; Aider-
man Detric Feggett, District 2,
City of Savannah; Honorable
Van R. Johnson, II, Mayor,
City of Savannah; Joseph A.
Melder, City Manager, City of
Savannah; Dr. W. Todd Groce,
President and CEO, Georgia
Historical Society; Reverend
Christopher J. Pittman, First
Bryan Baptist Church; and
Fuciana Spracher, Municipal
Archives Director, City of Sa
vannah.
The marker text reads:
The Montmollin Building
and Bryan School
Banker and slave
trader John S. Montmollin
commissioned this building
(c.1856) for his business. Af
ter Montmollin's death, Alex
ander Bryan continued using
the building to hold and sell
enslaved people. When US
General William T. Sherman
captured Savannah in Decem
ber 1864, the US government,
implementing emancipation,
confiscated the building and
provided it to Savannah’s Af
rican-American community,
which formed the Savannah
Educational Association (SEA)
to fund and establish schools.
This building became the site
of Bryan School. On January
10, 1865, at the school’s open
ing, hundreds of Black chil
dren marched here from First
African Baptist Church. SEA
schoolchildren publicly show
cased their knowledge of gram
mar, history, geography, arith
metic, and other subjects in
July 1865. The American Mis
sionary Association, a north
ern benevolence organization,
absorbed SEA and founded the
Beach Institute in 1867, con
solidating several schools, in
cluding Bryan School.
