FVSU Wins Men’s Regular Season Volleyball Title

completed its perfect Southern
Intercollegiate Athletic Confer
ence men’s volleyball schedule
with a 3-0 sweep at Benedict
College and claimed its first
regular season title.
For the first time in
the three-year program exis
tence, the Wildcats are SIAC
regular season champions.
FVSU finished its regular sea
son with a record-win total at
15-8 and completed the per
fect SIAC mark of 10-0. In
fact, FVSU won 30 of 31 sets
played and dropped only the
second set on Friday night at
Edward Waters stopping it
from 10 match sweeps. Taking
away the opening California
trip against Pepperdine, UCLA
and USC, the Wildcats won 15
of the 20 matches or a .750 win
percentage.
FVSU will move to
be the top seed in the upcoming
SIAC Tournament from this
Thursday through Saturday
(April 18-20) held at Edward
Waters University in Jackson
ville, Fla.

Heard Declares For WNBA Draft

en’s basketball standout Amari
Heard entered her name to be
apart of the 2024 WNBA Draft.
This year’s draft took
place on April 15 at the Brook
lyn Academy of Music. ESPN
will broadcast it live at 7:30
PM.
Heard, a graduate
student from West Point, Mis
sissippi, averaged 13.9 points,
7.7 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.4
assists per game this season
while helping SSU to the SIAC
regular season Eastern Divi
sion title.
The 6-foot-guard
scored a season-high 25 points
and six steals on February 7
against Miles, pulled down 13
rebounds on January 29 against
Allen, four assists on January 8
against Morris and two blocks
on January 15 against Albany
State.
Heard led the Lady
Tigers in points (348), made
held goals (153) and steals (58)
and was second on the squad in
rebounds (193).
Among the SIAC cat
egory leaders, Heard was sec
ond in the conference in held
goal percentage (.453), fifth
in scoring average, sixth in re
bounds and ninth in steals.
Heard earned First
Team All-SIAC honors in
2023-24 and made the All-SI-
AC Second Team in 2022-23.
In early March 2024,
Heard was named to the HBCU
All-Stars LLC inaugural Na
tional Women’s Basketball
List for seniors and graduate
students from Division I and
Division II HBCUs with no re
maining eligibility.
Savannah State end
ed the 2023-24 season with
a 20-6 record and made it to
the semi-finals of the SIAC
Tournament where they lost to
Miles in overtime.
Heyward Named Freshman of the Year

USC Beaufort women’s bas
ketball standout Janiyah Hey
ward was named the Freshman
of the Year in the Peach Belt
Conference.
Heyward started all
25 games for USC Beaufort in
their first season of women’s
basketball, leading the team
with 13.1 points per game. The
5-foot-7 guard was 10th in the
PBC in scoring and ninth in
rebounding with 6.9 per con
test. The PBC Player of the
Week on Dec. 11, she had three
games with 20 or more points,
including a 31-point outing
against Regent on Dec. 9, the
most in a game for the Sand
Sharks this season. Heyward,
